Iria Maina Falls: A Hidden Gem in Konoin

Tucked away in the lush highlands of Konoin Sub-county, the Iria Maina Falls remains one of Bomet County’s best-kept natural secrets. Located about 37 kilometers from Bomet town, the site is reached via the C24 Bomet–Tenwek–Silibwet Road, through Mogogosiek, and just 6 kilometers before Litein Town. From Litein, the road loops back to the B3 Narok–Bomet–Kisii Road, reconnecting at Kaplong, creating an enjoyable scenic circuit through tea country.

Set in Boito Village of Itare Location, this enchanting waterfall cascades gracefully along the Itare River, a tributary that nourishes the surrounding farmlands. Though still relatively unexplored, Iria Maina Falls offers a captivating riverside experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. The area’s charm lies in its quiet, untouched setting — a place where you can truly feel Kenya’s natural rhythm away from urban commotion.

A key attraction during a visit here is the riverine walk along the Itare River, which meanders through a serene landscape before tumbling over rocky ledges into small pools below. Along the riverbanks, visitors can also explore a series of natural caves, which add a touch of mystery to the location and make it ideal for hiking and photography. The site’s potential for eco-tourism and adventure travel is vast, particularly for those seeking offbeat experiences in the Rift Valley.

Recent developments have brought renewed attention to the area. Bomet County, in collaboration with private investors, has initiated the construction of a 14 MW hydro-power plant at Iria Maina Falls — a project designed to harness the Itare River’s energy potential while complementing conservation goals. The project underscores the growing recognition of the site’s economic and environmental importance, balancing natural beauty with sustainable progress.

Whether you visit for its peaceful scenery, scenic hikes, or the sound of cascading water echoing through the valley, Iria Maina Falls is a worthy stop for travelers exploring Kenya’s southwestern highlands. Its calm surroundings, cool climate, and pristine views make it one of the most tranquil destinations in Bomet County.
