Safety Concerns for Travel to Iraq

General Safety

Travel to most parts of Iraq, including Baghdad and central Iraq, is strongly discouraged due to ongoing threats of terrorism, armed conflict, and kidnapping. Violent incidents, including bombings and shootings, remain a significant risk, particularly in populated areas.

Iraqi Kurdistan

The northern region of Iraqi Kurdistan is relatively safe and has a separate visa policy. While terrorist activity is rare, travelers should remain vigilant and avoid areas outside Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) control.

Visa-Free or Visa on Arrival

  • Others: Australia, New Zealand.

This visa can be extended for up to 90 days and may even be converted into a work visa.

Application for Non-Eligible Countries

Nationals who are not eligible for VOA can apply through Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) representative offices abroad.

Key Differences Between Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan Visas

  1. Visa Policy:
    • Iraq: Requires a visa for most travelers.
    • Iraqi Kurdistan: Offers VOA to many Western countries.
  2. Safety:
    • Iraq: High risk of terrorism and violence.
    • Iraqi Kurdistan: Relatively stable and secure.
  3. Extensions:
    • Iraq: Visas are not extendable.
    • Iraqi Kurdistan: Visas can be extended and converted into work permits.

Conclusion

Traveling to Iraq requires careful planning and consideration of safety risks. While Iraqi Kurdistan offers a more stable environment with lenient visa policies, the rest of Iraq remains volatile. Ensure all visa requirements are met and stay updated on the latest travel advisories before planning your trip.
