Apple is set to release iOS 18.4 in early April, and while Apple Intelligence features are expanding to new regions, one of the biggest surprises in the update is a major audio upgrade for the AirPods Max (USB-C version).
Lossless Audio via USB-C
With iOS 18.4, users of the USB-C AirPods Max can enjoy 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio via the included USB-C cable. This unlocks high-fidelity listening for over 100 million lossless tracks on Apple Music.
Additionally, Apple says this will enable creators and musicians to record and mix Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking—turning the AirPods Max into a tool for studio-quality audio production.
Ultra-Low Latency for Gaming and Streaming
When connected via USB-C, the AirPods Max will also support ultra-low latency audio, described as being on par with built-in speakers. This is a big win for mobile gamers, livestreamers, and creators needing precise audio-video sync.
These features will be supported on:
- iPhones running iOS 18.4
- iPads on iPadOS 18.4
- Macs running macOS Sequoia 15.4
New $39 3.5mm-to-USB-C Adapter
To complement this update, Apple has introduced a new $39 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter, designed for users wanting high-quality, low-latency wired audio on planes or with non-USB-C devices.
Unlike Apple’s existing USB-C to 3.5mm dongle, this one works in reverse, allowing:
- AirPods Max to connect to traditional headphone jacks (e.g., airplanes)
- iPhones or iPads to plug into car audio systems via audio-in ports
Final Thoughts
These new features make the USB-C AirPods Max a much more compelling option for audiophiles, gamers, and professionals. With lossless playback and real-time audio response, Apple is doubling down on delivering studio-grade performance—right from your headphones.
The iOS 18.4 update is expected to roll out in early April 2025.
