Instagram has officially launched two new game-changing features: Repost and location sharing. These updates mark a significant move to expand user engagement, increase visibility for creators, and make connecting with friends more dynamic and interactive. The Instagram Repost and location sharing rollout reflects the platform’s push to stay competitive with rivals like TikTok, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter).
Repost: Instagram’s Answer to Twitter’s Retweet
The new Repost feature allows users to reshare public reels and feed posts with their followers, much like Twitter’s retweet function. When you repost content, it’s:
- Recommended to your followers in their feeds
- Credited to the original creator
- Saved in a new Reposts tab on your profile
This means even if someone doesn’t follow the original creator, they can still see their content through a repost. According to Instagram, this creates “a new opportunity to reach more people whenever you create something worth sharing.”
Users can also add a comment or note to any repost using a “thought bubble” that appears once the repost icon is tapped, adding personal context to the share.
Instagram Map: Location Sharing with a Twist
Borrowing from Snapchat, Instagram now offers a Map-based location sharing feature. This lets users share their most recent active location with selected friends or close friends. Location sharing is off by default and fully customizable, allowing you to:
- Choose who sees your location
- Exclude specific friends or places
- Turn location sharing off anytime
- View a live map showing reels, stories, posts, and notes from your network based on location
The map is located at the top of your DM inbox, and content is available for 24 hours. Even if you’re not sharing your location, you can explore location-tagged content from mutuals and creators you follow.
Instagram emphasizes that this is a “lightweight way to connect”, giving users a glimpse into what their favorite people are posting and where they’re posting it from.
Parental Supervision for Teens
If you’re a parent with supervision controls set up, you’ll get notified when your teen turns on location sharing. Parents will also be able to:
- Approve or block location-sharing access
- See who the teen is sharing their location with
This feature is designed with safety and transparency in mind while still enabling connection.
Friends Tab in Reels Now Global
Instagram has also expanded the Friends tab in Reels globally. This tab showcases:
- Public reels your friends have engaged with
- Recommendations from Blend groups you’ve started
It’s meant to help you discover reels your closest friends love, making the Reels experience more personalized and socially driven.
