The IEBC voter portal has officially been restored as of July 8, 2025, following an unexpected system maintenance period that began earlier this week. The restoration comes a day after growing public concern over the lack of access to the commission’s critical voter verification services.
Web and SMS Verification Services Now Active
Kenyans can now resume checking their voter registration details through the IEBC web portal and SMS service.
To verify, voters can:
- Visit the IEBC Voter Portal and enter their ID or passport number and year of birth.
- Send a text message with their ID or passport number, followed by year of birth, to 70000.
The IEBC confirmed that both systems are now fully operational across all platforms.
Official Statement from IEBC
In a press release on the morning of July 8, 2025, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) stated:
“We are pleased to inform the public that the voter verification system is back online following successful completion of maintenance. The upgrade enhances our system’s speed, reliability, and data security.”
The statement added that all voter information remained secure during the process.
Upgrade Improves Performance and Security
The commission explained that the upgrade was part of its long-term plan to modernize its digital infrastructure ahead of future electoral events.
“These improvements are critical as we move toward a more robust, secure, and transparent electoral process,” said IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.
The IEBC also acknowledged the inconvenience caused and thanked the public for their patience.
Public Reaction to Restoration
The restoration comes amid relief from the public and political stakeholders, many of whom had raised concerns about the timing of the outage, which coincided with the Saba Saba commemorations.
Civil society groups and electoral observers had called for more transparency, prompting the commission to act swiftly to resolve the issue.
What’s Next?
IEBC has encouraged voters to verify their registration details early and report any errors before the next election cycle begins.
“We urge all Kenyans to take advantage of the restored services and ensure their details are accurate.”
The commission promised improved communication moving forward and reiterated its commitment to holding credible, transparent elections.
