Nairobi, Kenya – Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made explosive allegations against President William Ruto, claiming that he was offered Ksh.2 billion to step down from office. Speaking during an interview with Royal Media Services’ vernacular radio stations—Mulembe, Vuuka, and Sulwe FM—Gachagua described the proposal as a direct request from the Head of State.
Allegations of Bribery and Political Betrayal
According to Gachagua, the offer included a secure retirement package, proper security, and continued remuneration. He further stated that President Ruto suggested that stepping down would not mark the end of his political career, as he could later run for another elective office.
“The President asked me to step down, promising Ksh.2 billion to retire comfortably, with proper security and remuneration. He suggested that I could consider running for political office in the future,” Gachagua alleged.
The former Deputy President also accused certain Members of Parliament allied to him of urging him to accept the offer and pave the way for a new political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections. He claimed that some MPs received Ksh.500,000 and a section of Senators were given Ksh.10 million each to facilitate his removal from office.
Condemning Government Over Abductions and Security Failures
Shifting focus to the rising cases of abductions in Kenya, Gachagua strongly criticized the government, arguing that it had failed to protect its citizens while engaging in peace talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“How can you advocate for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo while our youth are being abducted here at home?” he questioned.
He specifically condemned the recent abductions of chiefs in Mandera, saying that such incidents have now become disturbingly frequent. His remarks come amidst growing public concern over the unexplained disappearances of civilians, which have raised fears of a deteriorating security situation in the country.
Disagreements with Ruto Over Government Policies
Gachagua also attributed his fallout with President Ruto to deep disagreements over key government policies, particularly the Affordable Housing project and heavy taxation measures. He argued that the government’s economic policies are out of touch with the realities facing ordinary Kenyans.
The former Deputy President further criticized the inclusion of opposition leaders in Ruto’s Cabinet, saying that the move has failed to bring meaningful change to governance. According to him, Kenya Kwanza’s leadership has lost direction and is no longer prioritizing the interests of the people.
“The current government, which has incorporated some opposition parties into the Cabinet, has failed. Nothing has changed despite the so-called unity efforts,” Gachagua asserted.
Mt. Kenya Region ‘Abandoned’ Politically
Turning to regional politics, Gachagua lamented that Mt. Kenya is now politically marginalized, with the President shifting focus to other regions.
“Mt. Kenya is gone. The President is now seeking support from Mt. Elgon. My only mistake was uniting my people,” he remarked.
He urged Kenyans, particularly those from the Western region, to form a united front, suggesting that the government has abandoned certain regions in favor of new political alliances.
Engaging the Youth: Gachagua’s Next Move
Addressing the younger generation, Gachagua announced plans to engage Kenyan youth in his political agenda, claiming that the Gen Z generation currently lacks leadership. He expressed willingness to take up the role of a political mentor and leader for young Kenyans.
“Gen Z lacks leadership, and if they accept me as their leader, I would be honored to take on that mandate,” he concluded.
Political Ramifications
Gachagua’s claims add fuel to the already simmering tensions within Kenya Kwanza, further exposing the internal power struggles that have been playing out behind closed doors. If proven true, the allegations could severely damage the credibility of President Ruto’s administration, especially regarding transparency and governance.
Political analysts suggest that Gachagua’s continued defiance could signal the formation of a new political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Elections. With the former Deputy President rallying his support base, Kenya’s political landscape could be in for another round of intense power struggles.
As the political storm brews, all eyes are on President Ruto’s response to these serious allegations. Will he address the claims head-on, or will the tensions within Kenya Kwanza continue to escalate?
