Durability Test Confirms iPhone 17 Pro Series Vulnerable to Scratches

The iPhone 17 Pro durability test has revealed a surprising weakness in Apple’s latest flagship. Despite its premium build and advanced design, the Pro series appears vulnerable to scratches, especially around the camera module edges. This discovery has sparked widespread discussions among Apple enthusiasts, with some already calling the issue “scratchgate.”

Apple’s new aluminum unibody design was introduced to improve heat dissipation and structural integrity. While it succeeds in most areas of performance and resilience, the scratch vulnerability raises questions about long-term durability for users investing in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Scratchgate: What Durability Tests Revealed

Durability expert and YouTuber Zack Nelson (JerryRigEverything) put the iPhone 17 Pro through his standard series of stress tests. His findings show that both the Deep Blue and Cosmic Orange variants are especially prone to scratches.

The anodized coating, meant to provide an elegant finish, does not bond well with the sharp edges of the oversized rear camera module. Everyday contact with items such as keys, coins, or even grit from pockets can cause visible chipping on these edges.

While most of the frame and screen passed the scratch, bend, and burn tests with flying colors, this specific weak point has left many users concerned about Apple’s design choices.

Why the Edges Are Vulnerable

The issue stems from the anodized coating process. On flat surfaces, the finish adheres strongly, but on sharper corners like those surrounding the camera lenses, the coating is thinner and less resistant to abrasion.

  • Blue and Orange models are more affected, as the bold colors make scratches stand out more clearly.
  • Neutral variants like Graphite or Silver show less visible damage, but the structural issue remains.
  • Users report that micro-scratches quickly accumulate during daily use, lowering resale value and affecting aesthetics.

Protection Remains Essential

Apple has not commented officially on the “scratchgate” reports, but experts suggest that the only reliable solution is a protective case or skin. Screen protectors and lens covers may help, but they cannot fully shield the anodized camera edges.

Despite this flaw, it’s worth noting that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max excelled in all other durability aspects. The aluminum body handled pressure without bending, and the display resisted scratches up to Mohs level 6, consistent with premium smartphones.

Price and Availability

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB, 12GB RAM – ~$1,419 / €1,449
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max 512GB, 12GB RAM – €1,699 / £1,399

These premium prices highlight why many users are frustrated with the scratch issue, as they expect flawless resilience from devices in this range.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone 17 Pro durability test confirms that while Apple continues to innovate with materials and thermal design, scratch resistance remains a concern. For buyers, investing in a strong case is no longer optional—it’s necessary.

Apple may face ongoing criticism from users who expected more from its flagship Pro models, especially at such premium pricing. Still, the devices remain among the most powerful and stylish smartphones on the market, balancing high performance with elegant design.
