The backbone of healthcare delivery in Uganda lies in its District Hospitals, also referred to as General Hospitals. These facilities form the third level in the national healthcare system after national and regional referral hospitals. They provide preventive, promotive, and curative services to populations at the district level and serve as referral centers for lower-level health units such as Health Centre IVs.
Currently, Uganda has over 139 general hospitals, but some of the most prominent and widely recognized are listed below. These institutions play a crucial role in expanding access to healthcare in both rural and urban districts, ensuring that essential services are within reach for millions of Ugandans.

These hospitals provide essential healthcare services such as outpatient care, inpatient care, maternal and child health services, surgery, and emergency response. Many of them also serve as teaching centers for nurses and medical officers.
The District Hospitals in Uganda are vital because they reduce the patient burden on the Regional and National Referral Hospitals. By providing affordable healthcare close to local communities, they ensure equity and accessibility in the health sector.
Challenges remain, such as underfunding, shortages of medical staff, and outdated infrastructure. However, efforts by the Ugandan government and partners continue to strengthen these facilities, making district hospitals key players in the country’s goal of achieving universal health coverage.
