A boot sector is a dedicated region at the beginning of a storage device—such as a hard drive, SSD, or USB drive—that contains machine code essential for initiating the computer’s boot process. When a system is powered on, the BIOS or UEFI firmware reads the boot sector to locate and load the operating system. It typically contains the Master Boot Record (MBR) or other boot loaders. Corruption of the boot sector can prevent a system from starting and may be targeted by malware like boot sector viruses.
