CRB Clearance Certificate in Kenya – How to Get It

In Kenya, the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) plays a critical role in maintaining credit records, which are used by lenders, employers, and even government agencies to evaluate your financial credibility. If you’re applying for a loan or seeking employment, you may be required to provide a CRB clearance certificate. This document confirms that you have no outstanding loans or defaulted credit accounts, allowing you to prove your financial reliability.

In this article, we’ll explain how to obtain a CRB clearance certificate in Kenya, including the registration process, where to get the certificate, and the associated costs.

What is a CRB Clearance Certificate?

A CRB clearance certificate is an official document that certifies you have no non-performing loans or credit defaults listed in the credit bureau’s records. It indicates that you are creditworthy and have settled all outstanding debts or arrears.

This certificate is often required by:

  • Lenders (banks, SACCOs, loan apps) when applying for loans.
  • Employers as part of background checks before hiring.
  • Government offices when applying for tenders, political nominations, or public office.

How to Get a CRB Clearance Certificate in Kenya

The process of obtaining a CRB clearance certificate is relatively simple, but it involves checking your credit report, clearing any outstanding arrears, and then applying for the certificate. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Check Your Credit Report

Before applying for a CRB clearance certificate, it’s important to check your credit status. You can do this through one of the three licensed CRBs in Kenya:

  • Metropol Corporation
  • TransUnion Africa
  • Creditinfo Kenya

Registration is required before accessing your credit status from any of these CRBs. You can register via their websites or mobile apps.

How to Register for Your Credit Report:
  1. Metropol Corporation:
    • Dial *433# on your Safaricom line and follow the prompts.
    • Enter your ID number, agent number (if applicable), and confirm your details.
    • Pay Ksh 100 via Paybill 220388 using your ID number as the account number.
    • Metropol will send you a Crystobol PIN and a link to your free credit report.
  2. TransUnion Africa:
    • Text your full names to 21272 from your registered line (SMS costs Ksh 19).
    • Alternatively, download the TransUnion Nipashe app from the Google Play Store.
    • Pay Ksh 50 via Paybill 212121 using your National ID number as the account number.
    • TransUnion will send you a verification code to complete your registration.
  3. Creditinfo Kenya:
    • Visit ke.creditinfo.com and navigate to the clearance certificate section.
    • Fill in the required forms and follow the instructions.

Once registered, you can access and check your credit report to see if you’re listed for any defaults.

Step 2: Settle Any Outstanding Loans

If you find that you’re listed as a defaulter in your credit report, you must pay off any arrears with the lenders who have reported you. You need to clear all the outstanding balances with the respective financial institutions before proceeding.

Once you’ve settled your debts, contact the lender(s) to request that they delist you from the CRB.

Step 3: Apply for the CRB Clearance Certificate

After clearing your debts and ensuring you are no longer listed as a defaulter, you can proceed to request the CRB clearance certificate from the respective CRB.

How to Apply for CRB Clearance Certificate:
  1. Metropol Corporation:
    • Log in to Metropol’s website www.metropol.co.ke using your Crystobol PIN.
    • Select ‘Clearance Certificate’ from the options.
    • Pay Ksh 2,200 via Paybill 220388 using your ID number.
    • Follow the prompts to complete your application and download the clearance certificate.
  2. TransUnion Africa:
    • Use the TransUnion Nipashe app to request your clearance e-certificate.
    • After submitting your details, you’ll receive the certificate via email in encrypted format. Open it using your ID number (omit the leading zero).
  3. Creditinfo Kenya:
    • Visit Creditinfo Kenya’s website www.ke.creditinfo.com.
    • Select the type of certificate you require (personal or company).
    • Fill in the forms and submit your request.
    • Follow the instructions to download your certificate.

CRB Clearance Certificate Costs

  • Metropol Corporation: Ksh 2,200 for the clearance certificate.
  • TransUnion Africa: Ksh 2,200 (same as Metropol).
  • Creditinfo Kenya: Ksh 2,200 (similar to other CRBs).

Important Points to Note

  • First-time Applicants: Obtaining a CRB clearance certificate is free for first-time applicants across all CRBs in Kenya.
  • Timeframe: Once you’ve settled your overdue debts, it may take 3-5 days for your lender to update the CRB, after which you can request the clearance certificate.
  • Delisting Period: If you defaulted on a loan, you may remain listed for up to 5 years before being fully delisted.
  • Avoid Scams: Be cautious of social media or third-party services that claim to help you “delete” your name from CRB records for a fee. These are often scams.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How Can I Get CRB Clearance Online?

You can obtain your CRB clearance certificate online by registering with one of the licensed CRBs, such as Metropol, TransUnion, or Creditinfo Kenya, and following the steps to request the clearance certificate.

How Long Does the Process Take?

The process of getting your CRB clearance certificate typically takes 3 to 5 days after your debts have been paid off and your lender has updated the CRB.

What If I Don’t Have a CRB Clearance Certificate?

Conclusion

A CRB clearance certificate is an essential document for anyone seeking to apply for loans, job opportunities, or tenders in Kenya.
