The clearance of imported postal parcels is a key process for individuals receiving packages through the Postal Corporation of Kenya. Whether you’re importing personal items or receiving goods from abroad, following the right procedure ensures timely delivery and compliance with customs regulations.
What to Do When Your Parcel Arrives
Upon arrival of your parcel, visit Posta with your original National ID, passport, or residence permit. Provide the tracking number to help retrieve your package. The parcel must then be opened in the presence of a customs officer to assess whether it contains restricted or prohibited goods.
- Prohibited items will be seized immediately.
- Restricted items require permits from the relevant regulatory authorities. These parcels are held until such documents are presented.
Customs Assessment and Payment Process
You will need to present an invoice for the parcel. If no invoice is available, customs will apply alternative valuation methods to determine the value of the goods. Once the value is confirmed, customs officers will complete assessment on a Postal Slip (P195) and generate a Form F147.
Taxes must then be paid using:
- Mobile money (e.g., M-Pesa)
- Bank transfer
- Card payment
After settling the taxes, the client pays Posta’s handling and storage charges, typically Ksh. 175 unless additional storage days apply. Once completed, you can now collect your parcel.
Additional Requirements for High-Value or Heavy Parcels
If your parcel exceeds:
- USD $1000 or Ksh. 100,000 in value
- 70 kilograms in weight
You are required to file a customs entry. After customs verification and approval, the parcel is released. You then pay the necessary postal charges and retrieve your consignment.
Parcels Delivered to Other Postal Branches
For parcels addressed to locations without an on-site customs officer, customs will assess the taxes in advance. The tax demand and parcel are forwarded to your postal branch. You’ll pay both taxes and postal charges at your branch, which will remit the taxes to KRA monthly.
