Apple’s latest M4 Mac mini comes with a design change that might prove a bit inconvenient for some users. Unlike previous models, the power button is now located on the bottom of the device, requiring users to tip or lift the Mac mini each time they want to turn it on or perform a forced restart. This subtle but impactful change wasn’t highlighted in Apple’s launch video or advertisements, and it has raised some eyebrows among users.
On Apple’s official store page, a close look reveals the new power button placement. While it isn’t located on the device’s very base, it sits underneath the back, slightly elevated by the cooling vent. From the front, the button is positioned toward the left rear of the Mac mini, which may not be an issue in more spacious setups but could be challenging for those placing it in tight spots or cabinets.
Previously, the power button was placed on the back of the device, allowing users to reach around without lifting or tilting the unit. Since that was also where power and other cables connected, accessing it was straightforward. Now, this bottom placement could require users to adjust the device physically if they need to restart it manually, especially if it’s locked up.
This design choice follows in the footsteps of other unusual Apple placements, like the charging port on the Magic Mouse. As users adjust to the new Mac mini’s design, there’s a likelihood we’ll see accessories and docks emerge to make the new button more accessible.
