Google is adding a new layer of data protection with the upcoming Android auto-restart security feature, which will automatically reboot phones and tablets if they remain locked for three consecutive days. Part of the Google Play Services 25.14 update, this move is designed to secure user data by forcing manual authentication after inactivity.
🔒 How the Auto-Restart Feature Works
When triggered, the device will reboot into what’s known as the “Before First Unlock” (BFU) state. In this mode:
- All user data remains encrypted
- Biometric features like face and fingerprint unlock are disabled
- Users must manually enter their PIN, password, or pattern to regain access
This feature ensures that even if a device is lost or stolen, unauthorized individuals cannot access personal data without the correct credentials.

Unlike a factory reset, this does not delete any data. Instead, it increases security by making sure only verified users can reactivate a dormant device. It mirrors Apple’s “Inactivity Reboot” introduced in iOS 18.1, which reboots iPhones and iPads after four days of no use.

This feature applies exclusively to:
- Android smartphones
- Android tablets
It does not affect:
- Android Auto
- Android TV
- WearOS smartwatches
Rollout will be gradual, and Google has not confirmed which devices will receive it first or whether a notification will appear before the reboot occurs.
