Amuria District is an administrative district in Eastern Uganda, named after its main town, Amuria, which also serves as the district headquarters. It is one of the districts that make up the Teso sub-region, an area with a rich cultural and agricultural heritage.
Location
Amuria District is strategically bordered by several districts:
- Otuke District to the north
- Napak District to the northeast
- Katakwi District to the east
- Soroti District to the south
- Kaberamaido District to the southwest
- Alebtong District to the west
The headquarters in Amuria town are located about 45 kilometres north of Soroti, the largest urban center in the sub-region.

The district covers a land area of 2,588.3 km² (999.3 sq mi).

This consistent growth highlights the district’s rising importance within Eastern Uganda.
Economic Activities
Agriculture forms the backbone of Amuria District’s economy. More than 90% of the population engage in subsistence farming or animal husbandry. Major crops grown include cassava, millet, beans, sorghum, groundnuts, and maize. Livestock rearing—especially cattle, goats, and poultry—also contributes significantly to household incomes.
Prominent People
Amuria District has produced notable leaders, including General Jeje Odongo, a senior military officer and politician. He served as Army Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (1998–2001), represented Amuria in Parliament (1988–1996), and held ministerial positions in defense, internal affairs, and foreign affairs in the Government of Uganda.
