American International School of Kuwait

The American International School of Kuwait is a private, co-educational institution in Maidan Hawalli offering education from kindergarten through Grade 12. Established in 1991, it has grown into one of the country’s most respected international schools, known for its strong academic foundation, modern teaching methods, and global outlook.

With a student body of nearly 3,000 representing multiple nationalities, the American International School of Kuwait provides a rigorous curriculum rooted in U.S. education standards while integrating Arabic and religion classes as required by the Ministry of Education. Since 1993, it has been an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, making it the only institution in Kuwait to offer the complete IB continuum from kindergarten through high school.

History and Development

Founded by Dr. Kamil Al-Rayyes in September 1991, AIS began with just 300 students in Surra before relocating to its present campus in Salmiya in 1995. It is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools (NESA). Over time, the school has expanded its programs and facilities, establishing itself as a premier international learning hub in Kuwait.

AIS offers a comprehensive education with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes. Instruction is primarily in English, with Arabic and Islamic Studies integrated into the curriculum for compliance with national education requirements. The school is managed by a Board of Trustees and led by Superintendent Rebecca Stinson. Principals oversee different levels, including Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, and High School divisions. In 2022, alumna Dana Shuhaibar became the first Kuwaiti appointed as head of a private school in the country, marking a milestone in leadership at AIS.
