Airtel Money subscribers in Kenya will soon experience full interoperability with M-Pesa users as Airtel prepares to open its cash tills and paybills to transactions from the rival platform starting in March. This strategic move is set to bridge the long-standing gap in mobile money interoperability, fostering a more inclusive financial ecosystem in the country.
Breaking Barriers in Mobile Money Transactions
Since 2022, Airtel Money users have been able to make payments into Safaricom’s M-Pesa paybills and tills, but the reverse was not possible. This limitation has been a significant barrier to seamless financial transactions, restricting M-Pesa users from making payments through Airtel Money’s mobile payment platforms.
Airtel Money Managing Director Anne Kinuthia-Otieno confirmed that the process to achieve interoperability is in its final stages and will be implemented within the current quarter.
“Currently, our customers can pay into the competition paybills or tills and the reverse is now going to happen, where any customer from the competition can also pay to any of the Airtel Money paybills and tills,” Kinuthia-Otieno stated in an interview.
This development is expected to revolutionize Kenya’s mobile money sector by providing customers with greater flexibility and convenience in making payments across different platforms.
A Step Towards Financial Inclusion
Interoperability in mobile payments ensures that different financial systems can clear and settle transactions seamlessly. By removing the current restrictions, the initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader financial inclusion agenda, which seeks to provide users with diverse options while promoting fair competition in the mobile money sector.
Kinuthia-Otieno further emphasized the collaborative support from regulators and competitors in facilitating this milestone.
“By this quarter, we’ll now be able to have seamless interoperability on payments. We are getting a lot of support from our regulator and competition to be able to open this up,” she said.
Regulatory Push for Interoperability
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has been a strong advocate for seamless mobile money transactions across competing service providers. The push for interoperability began in 2018 when person-to-person (P2P) transfers between Airtel Money and M-Pesa were enabled. The upcoming move represents the second phase of a three-part CBK-led national payments strategy aimed at integrating mobile financial services in Kenya.
The initial phase allowed users to send money across networks, but until now, business payments through mobile wallets have remained largely restrictive. In 2022, Safaricom introduced interoperability for its Lipa na M-Pesa platform, allowing payments from rival services. The latest update will now grant Airtel Money users the same privilege, ensuring a level playing field for both mobile money giants.
Impact on Kenya’s Mobile Money Landscape
Kenya has one of the most advanced mobile money ecosystems globally, with M-Pesa dominating the market share. However, Airtel Money has been working to expand its reach, offering competitive services to attract more users. By enabling cross-network business payments, customers will no longer be restricted to a single provider, giving them the freedom to transact based on their preferred service.
The anticipated rollout of full payment interoperability is expected to:
- Enhance Competition: By allowing payments across networks, businesses and consumers will have more choices, reducing monopolistic control and promoting fair pricing.
- Boost Financial Inclusion: More Kenyans, especially small businesses and informal traders, will benefit from increased accessibility to different payment platforms.
- Improve Convenience: Users will no longer have to rely on third-party solutions or cash withdrawals to transfer money between networks.
A New Era for Mobile Payments
With this development, Kenya’s mobile money ecosystem is set for a transformation that will encourage innovation, enhance financial transactions, and create a seamless user experience. As March approaches, both Airtel Money and M-Pesa users eagerly anticipate the convenience that comes with full interoperability, marking a new era of digital financial inclusion in the country.
