Agago District is a district in Northern Uganda, situated within the Acholi sub-region. It is named after its administrative center, Agago town, which serves as the district headquarters.
Location
Agago District shares borders with Kitgum District to the north, Kotido District to the northeast, Abim District to the east, Otuke District to the south, and Pader District to the west.
Agago town lies approximately 80 km southeast of Kitgum, the nearest major town, and about 370 km north of Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city.

Overview
Agago District is among Uganda’s newest administrative districts. It was established by an Act of Parliament and officially began operations on 1 July 2010. Before gaining district status, Agago was part of Pader District.
The district forms part of the Acholi sub-region, which also includes:
- Amuru District
- Gulu District
- Kitgum District
- Lamwo District
- Nwoya District
- Pader District
Agago covers an area of about 3,496.8 km², with an elevation of approximately 1,060 meters (3,480 ft) above sea level.
Population
Agago District has experienced steady population growth over recent decades:
- 1991 Census: ~100,700 people
- 2002 Census: ~184,000 people
- 2014 Census: ~227,792 people
This population growth highlights the district’s increasing importance within the Acholi sub-region.
Key Features
The district is characterized by savannah woodlands, hills, and river valleys, including the Aruu River which flows through the area. Like much of Northern Uganda, Agago has a mixed economy, with subsistence farming and livestock rearing forming the backbone of livelihoods.
