Fred Ambani Raises Security Concerns as Mashemeji Derby Heads to ‘Hostile’ Homa Bay
With the 97th edition of the Mashemeji Derby fast approaching, AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani has voiced significant concerns over the decision to stage the high-stakes clash against Gor Mahia at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
Traditionally hosted in Nairobi, the derby will now unfold in a region where Ambani believes the atmosphere may be hostile for AFC Leopards fans and players.
Ambani: “This Isn’t Our Usual Battlefield”
Speaking to reporters, Fred Ambani, who holds an unbeaten record against Gor Mahia as both a player and coach, questioned the unfamiliar setting of the derby.
“It’s not the first time the derby is held outside Nairobi, but fans have gotten used to the Nairobi atmosphere,” he said.
“Now it’s being taken to a place our fans feel is a hostile environment. It’s not what we’re used to.”
Ambani fears that fans in Western Kenya, who may not fully grasp the historic blend of rivalry and mutual respect, could unintentionally inflame tensions on matchday.
Security Top of Mind for AFC Leopards
The Leopards tactician also raised serious concerns about matchday safety, urging Gor Mahia—who are the home team—to prioritize proper security arrangements.
“Normally in Nairobi, fans from both sides coexist,” he noted.
“But this time, the game has been taken to an area where protocols might not be well understood, and personal rivalries could be misinterpreted.”
Ambani called on organizers to tighten security and ensure peaceful fan engagement to preserve the integrity of the derby.
Zico Defends Venue Shift: “Football Is for All”
In response to the criticism, Gor Mahia assistant coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno defended the decision, stating that Homa Bay is part of a deliberate strategy to bring top-flight football to fans across the country.
“Football is played everywhere, not just Nairobi,” said Zico.
“We want to take the derby closer to our fans who rarely get to see us live.”
Zico also maintained that the game in Homa Bay aligns with Gor Mahia’s broader campaign strategy, as they chase the FKF Premier League title.
Derby Outlook: Gor Mahia Aim for Glory, Leopards Play for Pride
While Gor Mahia sit in the title race with everything to gain, AFC Leopards enter the derby with pride at stake.
“Gor are fighting for the title. We are fighting for our fans’ pride,” said Ambani.
“That makes us just as dangerous.”
The match is expected to draw thousands of passionate supporters to the lakeside town, but whether the historic occasion will be remembered for its football or security breaches remains to be seen.
