Meta has officially confirmed that ads are coming to WhatsApp, with plans to integrate them into the platform’s Updates tab. This section, home to both Channels and Status, is reportedly used by 1.5 billion users every day, making it a prime location for advertising.
WhatsApp’s pledge is that users’ personal messages will remain private, or “end-to-end encrypted”. The type of adverts users are served with will be determined by their location, language, the Channels they follow, and information on how they have interacted with previous marketing materials.
Where Will the Ads Appear?
According to Meta, ads will show up in two primary areas:
- Status Updates: Users will begin seeing advertisements inside Status posts. These ads aim to connect users with businesses, enabling quick conversations about products or services showcased in the Status.
- Promoted Channels: A new feature that will highlight channels Meta believes users may find interesting. These are also essentially advertisements and will appear while browsing the channel directory.
This shift marks a significant monetization step for WhatsApp, which until now has remained mostly ad-free despite its massive global reach.
Introducing Channel Subscriptions

Alongside advertising, Meta is launching Channel Subscriptions. This new paid feature allows users to subscribe to certain channels for exclusive content. While this isn’t directly ad-related, it represents another monetization route Meta is exploring for WhatsApp.
Will Ads Affect Private Chats?
Meta has stressed that ads will be confined to the Updates tab. The company claims this design ensures that users who use WhatsApp strictly for personal messaging, voice calls, and video calls will see “no change to your experience at all.”
Furthermore, end-to-end encryption will remain intact for all private messages, calls, and group chats. These personal interactions won’t be used to target ads.
What Data Will Be Used?
To tailor ads in Status and Promoted Channels, WhatsApp will rely on:
- Your city or country
- Your language settings
- The Channels you follow
- Your interaction with ads
If you’ve linked WhatsApp to the Meta Accounts Center, information from your broader Meta activity, including Facebook and Instagram, may also influence which ads you see. However, Meta maintains that:
- Your phone number will never be shared with advertisers
- Private messages and groups will not be used for ad targeting
When Will the Rollout Begin?
Meta says the rollout of ads and subscriptions will begin slowly over the coming months, allowing users and businesses time to adapt to the new advertising experience on WhatsApp.
What This Means for Users and Businesses
For everyday users, this update may not significantly affect the core experience—especially for those not engaging with Status or Channels. However, those who use WhatsApp for news or brand content may begin to see noticeable changes.
For businesses and content creators, this development opens up new advertising opportunities on one of the world’s most-used messaging platforms. With billions of active users, WhatsApp could soon rival Facebook and Instagram in marketing value.
