International volunteers selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup face stricter U.S. immigration requirements and higher personal costs than in previous tournaments. While volunteering offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience, it is not a sponsored program. Every volunteer must independently secure legal entry into the United States and fully fund their stay.
As of January 2026, U.S. authorities have clarified the legal status of FIFA-accredited volunteers. Most international volunteers must apply for a B-1 Business Visitor visa under a specific classification that recognizes unpaid participation in major international sporting events. Visa Waiver Program nationals may still qualify for ESTA, but only under strict conditions.
Understanding the visa process, total costs, and accommodation strategies early is critical. Failure to prepare can result in delayed approvals, financial strain, or denied entry at the border.
Summary of Expenses
| Item | Estimated Cost (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa/ESTA | $40 – $435 | Varies by nationality; $250 may be refundable |
| Airfare | $500 – $1,500+ | Book at least 6 months early |
| Lodging | $80 – $250 / night | Cheaper if sharing with other volunteers |
| Food | $30 – $50 / day | FIFA provides meals only during shifts |
Tips for a Cheap Stay
FIFA provides meals during active shifts but does not provide accommodation for volunteers. To minimize costs:
- Volunteer Host Cities: Focus on cities with established volunteer networks like Kansas City or Philadelphia, which have dedicated volunteer centers that may share local resources.
- Shared Housing: Connect with other selected volunteers via the FIFA Volunteer Platform or social media groups to share Airbnbs or short-term rentals.
- University Dorms: Check for summer housing at local universities in host cities (e.g., in Atlanta, Miami, or Dallas); many offer low-cost dorm rentals to the public during the summer months.
- Commuter Cities: Use host city “sprawl” to your advantage. For example, in Los Angeles, staying in outlying neighborhoods can be cheaper if you are prepared to use public transit or drive.
- Official Discounts: Monitor official host city sites for “Crewfare” partnerships or discounted hotel blocks reserved for tournament participants.
2026 U.S. Visa Requirements for World Cup Volunteers
The U.S. Department of State now formally recognizes FIFA-accredited volunteers as eligible for entry under the B-1 Business Visitor visa category. This classification applies only to unpaid volunteers and does not permit employment or compensation of any kind.
Most applicants should expect total visa-related costs of approximately 435 US dollars or more. This includes a standard non-immigrant visa application fee of 185 dollars and a newly introduced 250-dollar Visa Integrity Fee that applies to most non-immigrant visas issued from 2026 onward.
For citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries, ESTA remains an option. However, the ESTA fee has increased to 40 dollars, up from 21 dollars in late 2025. ESTA entry allows a stay of up to 90 days and is only valid if the volunteer role remains completely unpaid.
In limited cases, the 250-dollar Visa Integrity Fee may be refundable. To qualify, the volunteer must strictly comply with visa conditions and depart the United States within five days of visa expiry.
Proof Required for Visa Approval
Visa officers require clear documentation to approve volunteer travel. Every applicant must present an official FIFA volunteer selection letter confirming accreditation. This letter is mandatory and cannot be replaced with informal confirmation emails.
Applicants must also provide proof of sufficient personal funds. FIFA does not pay for airfare, accommodation, or daily living expenses. Only meals during active volunteer shifts are covered. Bank statements, sponsorship letters, or proof of prepaid accommodation may be requested.
Equally important is evidence of strong ties to the home country. Applicants must demonstrate nonimmigrant intent through employment records, family ties, property ownership, or ongoing education. Without this proof, visa refusal remains a real risk.
Step-by-Step Volunteer Visa Application Process
The visa process begins only after official FIFA selection. Volunteers cannot apply in advance or speculate on approval.
Applicants must complete Form DS-160, submit the required fees, and schedule a consular interview. Due to the scale of the 2026 tournament, U.S. consulates have expanded staffing and introduced expedited appointment pathways for FIFA-accredited participants.
At the interview, volunteers should present their FIFA selection letter, financial evidence, travel plans, and documentation proving intent to return home after the tournament. Passing security and background checks remains mandatory.
Estimated Costs for 2026 World Cup Volunteers
Visa or ESTA costs range from 40 to over 435 dollars, depending on nationality and eligibility for refunds. Airfare is expected to range between 500 and 1,500 dollars or more, depending on departure location and booking time.
Accommodation costs vary widely by host city. Volunteers should budget between 80 and 250 dollars per night, with significant savings possible through shared housing. Daily food expenses average 30 to 50 dollars outside volunteer shifts.
How Volunteers Can Reduce Living Costs
FIFA does not provide accommodation, making housing the largest expense. Volunteers should prioritize host cities with strong volunteer networks such as Kansas City or Philadelphia, where local coordination may help share resources.
Shared housing is one of the most effective cost-saving strategies. Volunteers often connect through the FIFA Volunteer Platform or dedicated social media groups to rent apartments together.
University dormitories offer another affordable option. Many universities in host cities such as Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas rent dorm rooms to the public during summer breaks at reduced rates.
Staying in commuter neighborhoods can also reduce costs. In large metro areas like Los Angeles, outlying districts may offer lower prices if volunteers are prepared to use public transit or drive.
Official host city websites may announce discounted hotel blocks or partnerships reserved for tournament participants. Monitoring these offers can lead to significant savings.
Key Advisories for International Volunteers
Applying early is essential. Visa appointment wait times remain high globally, and volunteers are advised to begin the process at least six to twelve months in advance.
FIFA does not provide visa sponsorship, legal representation, or individual assistance with immigration issues. Every volunteer is responsible for managing their own application.
Selection as a volunteer does not guarantee visa approval. All applicants must meet standard security, financial, and eligibility checks set by U.S. immigration authorities.
FIFA World Cup 2026: B-1 Visa Eligibility for Volunteers & Officials
On December 1, 2025, the Department of State (DOS) updated the Foreign Affairs Manual to provide a clear legal framework for B-1 visa issuance to FIFA-accredited volunteers and officials for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
This update is part of a broader strategy to manage the massive influx of travelers expected for the event, including increased consular staffing and specialized appointment slots for ticket holders.
B-1 Visa Guidelines for International Sporting Events
The updated Foreign Affairs Manual (FAM) now explicitly clarifies two categories of participants eligible for B-1 classification:
1. Referees, Judges, and Technical Officials
B-1 visas may be issued to officials hired through a formal selection process to to referee, judge, oversee, or officiate international sporting events such as FIFA World Cup or the Olympics.
- Scope: Includes timekeepers, weigh-in officials, starters, and lane inspectors, stroke and turn officials, and others responsible for applying the rules or regulations of individual sports.
- Compensation: Applicants cannot receive a salary from a U.S. source, though payment for incidental expenses is permitted.
2. Accredited FIFA World Cup 2026 Volunteers
Individuals selected and accredited by FIFA to volunteer in the U.S. during the during the FIFA World Cup 2026 may qualify for B-1 status, provided they meet specific financial criteria.
- Important Compensation Restriction: Volunteers are prohibited from receiving any salary or payment for their services from FIFA or any other source. FIFA does not cover travel or lodging; volunteers must prove they can self-fund their stay, though meals are provided during active shifts.
Key Takeaways for Applicants
- Financial Self-Sufficiency: Volunteers must be prepared to pay for their own airfare, housing, and personal expenses. Consular officers will likely request proof of funds during the interview.
- Consular Capacity Increasing Ahead of World Cup: : This specific FAM update applies only to accredited volunteers and officials. It does not grant any special visa privileges to general spectators or fans. However, the U.S. Department of State (DOS) is expanding consular capacity to manage anticipated World Cup visa demand.
- Section 214(b) Scrutiny: Despite the new guidelines, applicants whether voluteering for or attending the World Cup must still prove “strong ties” to their countries. Please note FIFA World Cup 2026 participation alone does not guarantee visa approval.
- Apply Early: The DOS is expanding consular capacity. Applicants are encouraged to apply early for visas. Prospective volunteers should begin the application process as soon as they receive FIFA accreditation. To learn more, visit DOS FIFA World Cup 26 website.

If it is a life-threatening emergency, please call the designated emergency number (CAN: 9-1-1 ; MEX: 9-1-1; USA: 9-1-1). In the case of a non-life-threatening emergency, alert your FIFA Lead immediately. Follow their instructions and adhere to all safety protocols, including evacuation procedures if necessary. If you have experienced or witnessed any situation involving discrimination, harassment, or any other human rights violation, report it using the FIFA Reporting Portal, which is an anonymous reporting mechanism through which anyone can report an incident, including volunteers, participants, spectators and staff.https://fifa.gan-compliance.com/p/Case?locale=en-GB
