The 2006 Kisima Music Awards, held in Nairobi, marked a historic moment for East African music. For the first time, the ceremony was broadcast across Africa after organizers partnered with Channel O, giving Kisima continental exposure. The awards also introduced a new “Social Responsibility” category, highlighting the event’s commitment to social impact beyond entertainment.
The motto for the ceremony was “Our Heritage of Splendor”, reflecting the event’s dedication to celebrating East Africa’s cultural richness. Performances featured leading regional acts including Juma Nature, Obsessions, and Nameless, while the show cemented Kisima’s role as a pan-African music platform.
Despite the glamour, the 2006 edition faced some controversy when at least five artists refused to perform at a follow-up charity concert, citing contractual disagreements with the Kisima Music Trust. Still, the event’s significance in expanding Kisima’s continental reach cannot be overstated.
