Five years ago we made a decision that I would quit my job and become a creator full time, never in a million years did I imagine being where I am today, being able to do the work I love and having that work provide for my family. الحمدلله
Here are some lessons I learnt a long the way:
- Save enough money to give yourself a chance. When it comes to leaving a job to become a creator you need time and space to let your creativity come to life. I had about one year worth of savings to give my family and I a year to make this work. I had the time, I had the space, now I could focus completely on the work.
- Find your routine, when I first started creating videos I was lost, then I committed to making a short video every single day. I did this for around 500 days, it gave me a mission every single day, it kept me focused, and it allowed me to learn quicker. Find a routine that works for you, it could be 1 picture a day, it could be 3 videos a week, just find a routine that works for you and stick to it.
- Have a circle of support. Salama has been the rock in my life that kept me focused on my dreams and goal of becoming a storyteller and entertainer. Whenever I felt lonely or felt like giving up she reminded me of why I started and where I wanted to be in the future, I am here today because of her alhamdulilah.
- Don’t be afraid to try new things! Being a creator is about being open to new ideas and experimenting, when I first started I made very formal videos, it was only when I explored with comedy that it opened up a whole new creative world for us.
- Keep moving forward, some of your ideas will work, some will go viral, some will be a disaster, celebrate or learn, but always keep moving forward.
- Have fun! The work is always going to be hard and challenging, but if you are not having fun then something is wrong, fix it and start again.
- Always respect, thank and appreciate your audience, they are the reason you can do the work you do.
Thank you always for the love and support you give my family and I, I will always be grateful and hope to always make you proud inshAllah. Much love and God blessالحمدلله
