Apple has officially introduced watchOS 26, a major update to its wearable operating system that adds AI-driven features, a visual redesign, and smarter interactions. Set for release this fall, the update brings the new Liquid Glass aesthetic, more powerful Smart Stack widgets, and an AI-infused Workout Buddy that personalizes fitness routines.
The standout feature in watchOS 26 is the AI-powered Workout Buddy. Drawing on workout history and personal fitness goals, the assistant delivers motivational insights with a virtual trainer-like voice. It tailors its suggestions in real-time, aiming to push users toward their health objectives with context-aware feedback.
Apple also brings its new Liquid Glass interface to Apple Watch. This design overhaul enhances widgets, controls, and notifications with real-time rendering effects that reflect and refract light, creating a dynamic and fluid interface. The Photos watch face now supports Liquid Glass numerals, blending seamlessly into personal imagery.
In the Workout app, Apple adds new corner buttons for faster access to key features. Users can also auto-play music or podcasts when workouts begin, with Apple Music offering intelligent playlist suggestions based on workout type and previous listening habits.
The Smart Stack sees upgraded predictive capabilities. It now incorporates sensor input, app usage, and routines to generate Smart Stack hints—gentle prompts for timely actions, like starting a playlist or launching an app.
watchOS 26 also introduces Live Translation in Messages for supported Apple Watch models when paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. Suggested actions in chats, such as sending Apple Cash or checking in with friends, will now appear automatically based on conversation context.
Users can mirror customizable iPhone wallpapers on their Apple Watch, use Smart Replies with better AI accuracy, and answer polls directly from the wrist. A new wrist gesture lets users dismiss calls, alarms, and timers by flipping the wrist—a simple but handy improvement.
The updated Notes app debuts on watchOS, supporting voice dictation, checklists, and Siri integration. Accessibility features expand with Live Listen and real-time captions for the hearing impaired, allowing audio streamed through a paired iPhone to be visualized on the watch.
Apple has also redesigned the Watch Face Gallery to highlight user photos and featured content. The beta version of watchOS 26 will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month, with full rollout expected in fall 2025.
