Trump’s proposed 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, combined with existing levies on Canadian goods, could push total tariffs up to 50 percent on some products if fully implemented, according to a White House official cited by Reuters.
A Canadian government source, speaking anonymously to Reuters, stated that while Canada has not been formally informed of the cumulative effect of the tariffs, the possibility “sounds plausible.”
On Tuesday, Mexico, Canada, and the European Union strongly condemned Trump’s metal tariffs, calling the decision reckless and counterproductive. They warned of retaliatory measures in response to the move.
