The most historic road in Kenya’s history – what was formerly known as Delamere Avenue–named after one of the first and most influential British settlers in Kenya Colony, Lord Delamere (1870-1930) –also known famously as just ‘D’), and later renamed to Kenyatta Avenue–named after Mzee Jomo Kenyatta (1897-1978), the founding President of independent Kenya.
This false colourisation of the stretch of the road gives an idea to just how bright and vibrant Nairobi was back then, though more organised and crisp, making it one of the model cities of its glorious time.
One may even notice the iconic Nayer Building, built by Sardar Gurdit Singh Nayer in 1913. The colonial style relic that was for two decades the tallest structure in Kenya Colony, is today known as Kipande House and houses KCB Group’s bank on Kenyatta Avenue.
