Is MLP an examination?

It is not an examination but an assessment. The main purpose of an examination is for placement and certification at the end of an education cycle. The purpose of an assessment is to find out what level the learners are in terms of competencies acquired as outlined in the curriculum.

What will happen to the learners who will be below expectation throughout?

Progressing to the next grade is guaranteed as interventions to assist the learner are sustained. However, if a learner persistently fails to improve, it means that the learner need not be subjected to the age-based pathway in the learning process. For instant a learner may take 2 years to acquire competencies that are expected to be acquired in 1 year. Such a learner need to undertake an assessment to identify their inability and be placed in an appropriate pathway

Why should Kiswahili be monitored under the Integrated Learning Areas (ILA). It should be independent just like English?

One of the purposes of Grade 3 MLP is to find out readiness of learners to transit to Grade 4. From Grade 4, the language of instruction is English and that is why it has been singled out as a separate assessment. According to international assessments, emphasis is laid on literacy and numeracy skills. For purposes of comparison with other countries Kenya opted to use Mathematics activities for Numeracy and English activities for Literacy.

Grade 3 MLP is expensive to parents and schools, who bears the cost?

MLP should be administered in the most natural environment just like the way teachers conduct classroom assessments. In undertaking the Integrated Learning Areas assessment, learners are expected to use locally available and affordable materials. Schools are also encouraged to use digital devices such as computers, laptops, projectors, and tablets to administer MLP assessment in a more interesting manner for the learners as well as reducing on costs of printing question papers.

When do I get my result slip and certificate after the release of examination results?

Result slips are dispatched to the Sub County Directors of Education to be collected by the heads of institutions within one month after the release for KCPE and KCSE examinations.

Certificates are received by the school 8 months after sitting examinations. Certificates for Teacher Colleges and TVET (Post School) examinations are collected within KNEC premises by College Principals

How do I know if my certificate has been processed?

Use the Query Management Information System (QMIS) to check the status via http://qmis.knec.ac.ke

You may apply for a Certification Letter. Kindly visit our website: http://www.knec.ac.ke Click on the “Downloads” and download the instructions for applying for a Certification Letter.

One cannot view his or her results online. Results can be accessed via short messages services (SMS) immediately after the release using a code to be provided by KNEC.

KCPE results slips can be obtained from the headteacher who will be able to download while KCSE will be printed and delivered to the schools by KNEC within one month after release.

When should supervisors/invigilators expect payment after the release of examinations results?

Thirty (30) working days from the date of receipt of complete documentation by the Finance Department.

How can I change my CP2 mobile number on the system?

The contracted professional needs to register a fresh using their current mobile number

Where is the link to fill in the supervisor’s details on the website?

Is Teaching Practice used for grading of a candidate?

Yes. The subject is graded independently. Although, the overall aggregate does not include the Teaching Practice grade, a candidate has to pass in Teaching Practice to be awarded a certificate in teaching.

What is Grade 3 MLP?

Monitoring Learners Progress (MLP) is the process of collecting and documenting evidence on knowledge, skills, values and attitudes acquired by a learner over a period of time as learning goes on. Grade 3 MLP is therefore process of finding out the progress learners have made in their quest to acquire the expected competencies after three (3) years of primary education, for purposes of decision making and instituting interventions.

How long will it take for schools to know learners scores in Grade 3 MLP?

Teachers are required to score the assessment using the marking guides provided and give immediate feedback to the individual learners at the school level

What will KNEC do to guarantee the integrity of learners’ scores by teachers?

One of the salient features of Competency-based learning and assessment is provision of evidence for accountability. When you provide a score or a descriptor on learners’ performance, it must be accompanied with evidence. There is a very strong conviction that once teachers, be it in private or public schools, understand this cardinal requirement they will align themselves to the tenets of objectivity.

INFO: During registration period, private candidates are expected to report to the Subcounty Director of Education to register for KCPE and KCSE examinations after paying the requisite fees.
