Functions of KNEC. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) is the national body responsible for overseeing national examinations in Kenya. Its current chairman is Professor John Onsati. This council was established under the Kenya National Examinations Council Act Cap 225A of the Laws of Kenya, in 1980. In 2012 this act was repealed in 2012 and replaced with KNEC Act No.29 of 2012.
The KNEC was established to conduct school, post school and other examinations after the dissolution of East African Examinations Council and the Ministry of Education [EAEC and ME]. After the dissolution of EAEC and the ME the Kenya National Examinations Council took the roles of ensuring validity and reliability of examinations; and to ensure conformity to Kenya’s goals and changes in government policy relating to the curriculum and examinations.
Functions Of The Kenya National Examinations Council
- Develop relevant examination policies, examination procedures, and supporting regulations.
- Develop various national examinations in Kenya at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of education (with the exception of universities).
- Register qualified candidates for various KNEC examinations in Kenya at the appropriate time according to published KNEC’s timetable.
- Conduct the various national examinations (at the aforementioned levels) and process the examination results in a timely manner.
- Award relevant certificates as well as diplomas to successful candidates.
- Conduct research on all educational assessment procedures as and when required.
- Carry out the equation of diplomas and certificates issued by other accredited examining boards (local and foreign).
- Conduct various examinations and assessments on behalf of credible foreign examination boards such as ABE (Association of Business Executives).
- Advise the Kenya National Government (and/or its agents) on matters relating to national examinations and certifications.

Powers Of The Kenya National Examinations Council
- Set and maintain the required examinations standards.
- Conduct public technical, academic, and other national examinations in Kenya from the to tertiary levels of education.
- Award KNEC diplomas or certificates to the candidates who have met the threshold in such national examinations (Such diplomas or certificates shall not be detained from the successful candidate by any person/institution).
- Confirm the authenticity of issued certificates or diplomas upon request by public institutions, government agencies, employers, learning institutions, and other parties.
- Undertake research activities on educational assessments.
- Advice public institutions on the development and/or use of any assessment or system upon request and according to the terms and conditions mutually agreed between such an institution and the council.
- Promote the recognition of KNEC qualifications (conferred by the KNEC Council) internationally.
- Advise the Government of Kenya on policy decisions that are relevant to or have ramifications on the core functions of KNEC or the administration/control of various examinations in Kenya.
- Carry out other incidental activities that will help promote the conducive performance of the above-mentioned functions.

Requirements for Certificate Replacement
These are the requirements for issuance of the replacement certificate:
- The applicant should download and fill an application form requesting for a replacement certificate. The completed form should be sent to council secretary/chief executive, KNEC, P.O. Box 73598 – 00200, City Square Nairobi.
To download the application form, log in to http://www.knec.ac.ke and on the left side point at certificate replacement and confirmation. Then click on application for replacement of certificates. Make sure you have the following before applying:
- The applicant should have a recommendation letter from the school or institution attended indicating that one had been issued with an authentic KNEC certificate.
- Those from private center or whose former school or institution closed down, should get a letter from PDE/DEO.
- The applicant should also have a police abstract indicating the loss of the original certificate. Functions of KNEC
Lost KCSE and KCPE Certificates Replacement
- To be attached to the certificate replacement request form is a sworn legal affidavit on the identity of the applicant.
- The applicant should attach a copy of his or her national identification card to the application form. Functions of KNEC
- Pay a processing fee. The applicant should deposit 5,000/= to cater for the replacement certificate and attach the deposit slip to the application form before submitting it to the council.
- Once approved, the replacement certificate will be issued within two months from date of application.
- The applicant should collect the replacement certificate in person from KNEC and remember to carry original ID card/passport or birth certificate.
