The Communist Party of Kenya (CPK) is a communist party in Kenya. It is chaired by Mwandawiro Mghanga. The Communist Party of Kenya (CPK) is a political party registered in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and Political Party’s Act of 2011. CPK is committed to uniting all Kenyans irrespective of their ethnic groups, class, gender and age to work for an alternative society away from the present unjust system; towards a society that realises the freedoms, human rights and development of each and all. This society is the vision and mission of the majority of Kenyans and its values are defined in article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya.
In this regard, CPK is conscious of Kenya’s noble history of struggle against foreign domination and imperialism. Our Party is the continuation of the social and national liberation struggle of the Kenyan patriots that ultimately brought about independence from British colonialism in 1963. We remember those elders who died or survived with great suffering in the struggles for national freedom. They sacrificed their lives and blood to give us self-respect in the period and aftermath of colonial domination. To them we owe and return, and shall forever return our respect and give them also our admiration and affection, and seek to emulate their love for our country, courage and persistence against all forms of exploitation and oppression.
Just as our patriotic ancestors did, CPK too believes that the establishment of a democratic and sovereign Government and State whose authority comes from all people of Kenya without excluding anyone, must always remain the demand of the Kenyan People. As is evident in the Constitution of Kenya that was inaugurated in 2010, the people do not want to have the present political and economic system based on capitalist social relations. They want a system the embodies the values of human dignity, equity, social justice, inclusiveness, equality, non discrimination, protection of the marginalised, patriotism, national unity, sharing, devolution of power, the rule of law, democracy and participation of the people. However, these noble wishes and aspirations will only be realised when Kenya replaces the capitalist system with the socialist system.
It is upon this background that the CPK has risen to the historic challenge of spearheading the struggle to shift away from the present capitalist political, economical, social, cultural and moral arrangements that are the basis of exclusion, discrimination, oppression and reaction in order to move towards a socialist system that will bring about a new Kenya necessary for the liberation and progress of our country.
CPK is a vanguard Party, as well as a mass organization guided by the ideology of Marxism -Leninism and its application based on the historical and material conditions of Kenya and the World around us. The Party is a people’s organisation, its paramount interest are the interests of the broadest masses of the people.
Membership is open to workers, peasants and farmers, intellectuals, artists, students, professionals and all Kenyans above the age of 18 who agree with the ideology of the Party.

The party was established in 1992 as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) by Johnstone Makau. The party did not nominate a presidential candidate in the December 1992 general elections, and received only 177 votes in the National Assembly elections.
Charity Ngilu joined the party before the 1997 elections, and was selected as the party’s presidential candidate. She finished fifth in a field of 15 candidates with 7.9% of the vote. The party also won 15 seats in the National Assembly. Ngilu left the party after the elections, and in 2001 was succeeded as party chairman by James Orengo. He stood as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2002 elections, but received just 0.4% of the vote; the party also lost all 15 seats in the National Assembly. Its vote share was reduced to 0.4% in the 2007 general elections, in which it fielded 24 candidates. It also failed to win seats in the 2013 elections, receiving only 0.15% of the vote with seven candidates. In 2019, the party changed to its present name.
In February 2022 the party garnered mild internet fame after a campaign video went viral.
