Leading Sikh architect Tarlok Singh Nandhra was honoured to welcome United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002) to Kenya when she visited her East African Colony in 1959. He was instrumental, along with Mohan Singh Jutla (1918-1966), in preparing the stage from which she would be addressing the public in Nairobi.
Tarlok Singh was the youngest Councillor of Nairobi City, while Mohan Singh was first non-European Deputy Mayor of Nairobi – the two were selected and accorded the honour by the Government to make stage arrangements where they even got to meet and greet the Queen Mother.
