During a recent interview with media personality Oga Obinna on August 23, in Narok, Senator David Ole Sankok shared surprising details about his financial success prior to his political career. Sankok revealed that he was significantly more prosperous as a medic compared to his current role as a politician.
Sankok recounted, “You don’t go into politics to make money. You go into politics to protect what you already have.” He explained how he initially set up a clinic under a tree in Suswa due to financial constraints. “When I was at the university, I couldn’t afford to rent a shop, so I started an open-air clinic and relied on a friend at a nearby hospital to refer patients to me.”
Despite being expelled from the University of Nairobi, Sankok used his time productively by working as a medic. “I took out a loan of KSh 20,000 to buy medicine and opened that clinic. I was also a student trainee at Kenyatta Hospital, where I translated for Maasai patients who couldn’t speak Kiswahili or English.”
Sankok went on to open four additional clinics after closing the original one. He shared that, at the height of his medical career, he was making KSh 50,000 a day from consultations alone, translating to KSh 1.5 million a month. This substantial income starkly contrasts with his current political salary of KSh 600,000.
Obinna expressed astonishment at the figure, asking, “KSh 50,000 a day?” To which Sankok confirmed, “Yes, it’s possible. This was between 2005 and 2014. I closed my last clinic in 2014.”
