Rubis Energy Kenya formerly KenolKobil Plc, is a pan African downstream oil company. The group’s operations span seven countries across Eastern, Central and Southern Africa and encompass the supply, storage, distribution and retail of a wide range of petroleum products.

The applicable labour legislation and, in particular, the prohibition of the use of child labour or any form of forced labour;

Health and safety rules for employees and environmental protection rules in force at their facilities;

The prohibition of any form of fraudulent activity within the framework of contractual relations;

The prohibition of all forms of corruption (public, private, passive or active), including the offer or gift of money, bribes, inducements or any other unjustified service or advantage proposed or received with the intention of influencing the conduct of a person with a view to obtaining preferential treatment, inducing a favourable decision or influencing the outcome of a negotiation;

The applicable national and international laws imposing economic and/or financial sanctions (embargoes) on natural and/or legal persons.

Rubis Energy Kenya runs a strong network of over 230 strategically and conveniently located service stations countrywide under the Gulf Energy, Kenol, Kobil and Rubis brands. Our stations are designed for maximum convenience and safety, with focus on value-added service at the forecourt.

Rubis Card

Rubis Card is our fuel management system that gives motorists total control of their fuel-related expenses. It is based on smart card technology and offers convenience and efficiency when making payments at the station. Additionally, we have partnered with key utility providers to ensure our Rubis Card provides a convenient bill payment service.

Our innovative convenience store brand, enjoy Store, provides world-class convenience to motorists on the go, saving them time and money.

LPG

Our K-gas brand is the preferred cooking gas in Kenya for domestic and commercial use thanks to our reliable supply and accurate quantity distribution, provided with the highest standards in terms of quality and safety. We also supply, mainly in bulk, all types of industrial customers.

Lubricants

Rubis Energy Kenya markets an extensive industrial, automotive and specialist range of high-quality lubricants under the K-Lube and Castrol brands. Our products, imported or locally blended, meet the highest specifications demanded by most automotive and equipment manufacturers.

Aviation

We refuel at the international airports in Nairobi and Mombasa most major passenger and cargo airlines. Our services meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards of into-plane refueling procedures and guidelines. Our safety record and efficiency in service delivery has made us the preferred supplier for major airlines

Commercial and Reseller

Our large base of commercial customers spans a range of industrial sectors such as food, transport, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, energy production and construction. We supply all types of bulk petroleum products, such as fuel oil, bitumen, diesel, and lubricants. We offer tailor-made and turn-key solutions to major infrastructure projects

Export Sales

We are a major exporter of petroleum products, LPG, oils and lubricants to a cross-section of African countries including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti and Ethiopia. This is supported by our high capacity fuel storage depots in our subsidiaries.

Storage and Assets

Rubis Energy Kenya operates fuel depots in Kenya (Mombasa and Nairobi), Zambia, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda.

We operate three aircraft refueling facilities: at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport in Nairobi, and Moi International Airport in Mombasa.

We operate state-of-the-art LPG filling plants in Kenya, Zambia, Uganda and Rwanda.

Overview

Headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya with subsidiaries in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

According to the Petroleum Institute of East Africa’s report released in December 2014, KenolKobil was ranked third with 13.9 percent market share behind Total Kenya and Vivo Energy.

History

KenolKobil, then Kenya Oil Company Limited (abbreviated Kenol), was founded on May 13, 1959, by R S Alexander as a Private limited company. The Company started its operations as a wholesaler of packaged Kerosene under the brand name “SAFI“. The company later began investing in service stations. In September 1959, Kenya Oil Company listed its shares on the Nairobi Securities Exchange making it the first petroleum company to be quoted on the exchange.

In the early 1980s, Kenol faced numerous financial challenges and was placed under receivership. The company came out of receivership in 1983 and its shareholders resumed full control of the business. In 1986, Kenol and Kobil Petroleum Limited, a Delaware registered holding company that acquired Mobil Oil’s assets in Kenya and Uganda in 1984, entered into a joint operations and management agreement. This agreement resulted in the sharing of distribution cost and managerial services thus enabling both companies to lower their operating costs and enhance profitability.

The year 1999 marked the beginning of regional expansion. That year, the group acquired a 100% stake of Galana Oil Uganda Limited and renamed it Kobil Uganda Limited. At the point of acquisition, Kobil Uganda owned 19 service stations. In 2001, Kenol expanded into Tanzania through the incorporation of Kobil Tanzania Limited as a wholly owed subsidiary. The group expanded further south in 2002 when it acquired 100% interest in Jovenna Zambia Limited and renamed it Kobil Zambia Limited.

The group expanded to Ethiopia in March 2005 when it incorporated Kobil Ethiopia. In February 2006, Kenol acquired Shell Rwanda SARL from Royal Dutch Shell and renamed it Kobil Rwanda. In 2007, the group acquired KLSS Rwanda’s assets and merged them to Kobil Rwanda. In the same year, the group acquired the assets Shell Ethiopia and merged them to Kobil Ethiopia.

Kenol and Kobil joint operations and management agreement came to an end in 2007 when Kenol acquired 100% of the shares in Kobil Petroleum.^[8] This transaction involved allotting 45.5 million shares in exchange for 100% of the issued shares of Kobil. To reflect its status as a merged company, the group’s name was changed from Kenya Oil Company Limited to KenolKobil.

In 2009, the group acquired Oil Burundi from Engen and rebranded it to Kobil Burundi SA. In 2011, the group resumed its expansion in the Southern African region through the incorporation of Kobil Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe and Kobil Mozambique in Mozambique. In the same year, the Group completed acquisition of a depot in Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main purpose of Kobil Zimbabwe was to form a joint venture with Engen to acquire the whole operations of Shell and BP in Zimbabwe. The partners were not able to receive government approval due to the Indigenization Law in Zambabwe. Kobil Zimbabwe has since been a dormant company. 2011 also saw the group acquire 25.5% stake in Lublend Limited through Kobil Zambia.

In May 2012, KenolKobil received a US$800 million takeover bid from Puma Energy, a subsidiary of Swiss Based Trafigura. However Puma Energy later terminated its bid to acquire the group.

In 2019, Rubis completed its full acquisition of KenolKobil and the company rebranded to Rubis Energy Kenya.

• Lublend Limited – Ndola, Zambia – 25.5% Shareholding – A Manufacture of petroleum lubricating oil and grease. Majority owned by Mobil Zambia Limited.

Rubis Energy Kenya is owned by Rubis Energie, a subsidiary of the Rubis Group, which is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange, following the full acquisition of both KenolKobil and Gulf Energy Holdings in 2019.

Rubis controls 8.6 percent of the local Kenyan market, making it the third-biggest marketer after TotalEnergies and Vivo Energies.

The shares of the stock of KenolKobil Limited are traded on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, under the symbol: KENO.

Rubis Energy’s ownership was brought into question following the acute fuel shortage experienced in the country. This was after President-elect William Ruto claimed that a number of powerful individuals in the country have interests in the petroleum sector thus creating an artificial shortage.

Following Ruto’s sentiments, reports emerged linking Rubis to the family of outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, claims that have never been substantiated.

Rubis is the leading petroleum companies in Kenya following its acquisition of Kenol Kobil in 2019 in a Ksh36 billion takeover.
