RAF International University – RIU was founded in the early 2000s through ITED (International Trust for Education), initially established as an institution offering Islamic and Arabic language courses at the diploma level. However, due to the demand for affordable quality higher education, the founders decided to expand and upgrade to a fully-fledged university offering degrees in various fields. As the custodians of the institution, ITED envisioned RIU to be an academic platform which aims at shaping the minds and producing a new breed of intellectuals and skilled professional who combine contemporary scientific approaches with noble human values.
We are a diverse and dynamic community whose members are connected by a common quest for knowledge. As a pioneering institution in Kenya, we are already leading the way in adding value to society, with our promise to include marginalized communities in higher education.
In January 2019, we gave scholarships to 50 students who are the first in their families to join University.
As a research university defined by originality and great ideas, RIU offers its undergraduate, and professional students distinct educational opportunities. We are preparing our students to meet the global challenges of today’s world and most importantly the fast-changing needs of tomorrow.
In cognizance of the fact that education provision can no longer be left to the Government alone, the Government of Kenya in the Sessional Paper No.1 of 1986 calls upon the private sector to play a greater role in the provision of higher education and development facilities to the Nation.
RAF is derived from an Arabic term (رحمة الإنسان فضيلة) RAHMAT AL-INSAAN FADHILA which means compassion and mercy. It reflects upon our objective to integrate the values of love, compassion and mercy into modern learning, science and technology, in order to facilitate human development.
RAF International University (RIU) founded by Dr. Mohamed Sheikh Osman, was based on the ideology that he could create an education alternative for marginalised communities by giving them the opportunity to get affordable world class education and facilities. His focus on creating positive attitudes, using local resources and encouraging community-led change has driven much of his work.
