Five years after successfully organizing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the nation will host another major event — FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 — with all games taking place in Doha.
The international basketball federation awarded Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) the hosting rights for the tournament on Friday. FIBA awarded the Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 to Berlin, Germany.
Just like the football world cup, the 2027 event will be the first-ever to be held in the Middle East region.
FIBA’s Central Board were impressed by Doha’s bid, which highlighted the competition’s compact geographical nature, unique flexibility with tournament venue helping better serve fans, as well as its emphasis on sustainability.
FIBA President Hamane Niang said: “The Central Board was impressed by the submission made by QBF. I’d like to congratulate them on behalf of the Board for the quality of work they’ve already completed in putting this bid together. We’re very happy to be able to award the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 to Qatar.”
“While we’re all looking forward to what we know will be another standout FIBA event, we’ll also enjoy the full journey to Doha. The qualification path to the World Cup has been a great success since its introduction in 2017, and we’ll be ready once again to follow all the action,” he added.
