Pixel 9’s GPS Bug: Has Google Given Up on a Fix?

Half a year after its release, the Google Pixel 9 is still suffering from a persistent GPS bug, and frustrated users are wondering if Google has abandoned the issue altogether. Despite widespread reports and complaints across Reddit and tech forums, there has been no official acknowledgment or fix from Google.

  • What’s Wrong with the Pixel 9 GPS?
  • Software or Hardware Issue?
  • Why Hasn’t Google Fixed This Yet?
  • What Can Pixel 9 Users Do?
  • Final Thoughts: Has Google Moved On?

With leaks of the Pixel 10 series already surfacing and the Pixel 9a nearing launch, some users feel like Google has moved on—leaving them stuck with a major navigation issue that hasn’t been addressed since launch.

What’s Wrong with the Pixel 9 GPS?

The bug in question affects GPS accuracy, making navigation unreliable. Users report that their GPS fails to track a straight line, instead showing jagged, erratic movement. This issue is particularly frustrating when using apps like Google Maps and Waze, where precision is key for driving or walking directions.

Some theories suggest that the phone may be relying too much on cellular networks for positioning instead of properly using GPS satellites. While this might not always be an issue in urban areas with strong network coverage, it can be a major problem in remote locations where GPS should take over.

Software or Hardware Issue?

The big question remains: Is this a software or hardware problem?

  • If software-related, a firmware update could likely resolve the issue. Yet, Google has released multiple Pixel updates since the phone’s launch, with no mention of a GPS fix. This suggests it may not be a simple patch.
  • If hardware-related, there’s no fix—users would either have to live with the issue or replace their phone.

Google has remained silent, offering no statements or solutions, leaving affected users in the dark.

Why Hasn’t Google Fixed This Yet?

There are several possibilities as to why Google might not be prioritizing this issue:

  1. Focus on New Devices – With the Pixel 9a nearing launch and Pixel 10 leaks already surfacing, Google may be shifting resources to new models instead of fixing issues on an “older” device.
  2. Not a Widespread Issue? – If the bug only affects a subset of users, Google may have decided it’s not urgent enough to investigate.
  3. Internal Confusion – If the issue is not clearly defined (hardware vs. software), Google may be reluctant to acknowledge it publicly without a clear solution.

What Can Pixel 9 Users Do?

For now, there’s no official fix from Google. However, if you’re experiencing the GPS issue, you can try:

✔️ Restarting the device – A simple reboot may help, though this is only a temporary solution.
✔️ Ensuring all system updates are installed – Even if Google hasn’t officially addressed the issue, a future update might fix it.
✔️ Using alternative navigation apps – Some users report better accuracy with apps like Here WeGo or OsmAnd.
✔️ Enabling high-accuracy location mode – Check Settings > Location > Location Services > Google Location Accuracy and turn it on.

For those severely impacted, contacting Google Support and reporting the issue could at least help bring attention to it.

Final Thoughts: Has Google Moved On?

With no official statement or fix nearly six months later, it’s hard not to wonder whether Google has quietly abandoned the Pixel 9’s GPS problem.

With attention shifting to the Pixel 9a and Pixel 10 lineup, Pixel 9 users may be out of luck unless Google surprises everyone with a last-minute patch. But with reports piling up, the frustration is real—will Google finally step up, or has it already moved on?
