The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has made significant leadership changes in the National Assembly. On Wednesday, the party nominated Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed as the new Minority Leader, replacing Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi, who was recently appointed by President William Ruto as the Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary.
Additionally, Suba North legislator Millie Odhiambo was nominated as the new Minority Whip, taking over from Junet Mohamed. In other appointments, Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi was named the Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, a position previously held by Treasury CS nominee John Mbadi.
The ODM party also confirmed the resignation of four party leaders who were nominated by President Ruto to the cabinet. Despite these nominations, the ODM party dismissed any allegations of entering into an agreement with President Ruto’s administration. The party emphasized its continued commitment to the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition and its role in the opposition.

The party announced plans for wide consultations among its membership to consider new appointees for the vacant positions left by the cabinet nominees. This announcement followed a closed-door meeting between Azimio leader Raila Odinga and several ODM leaders vying for key party positions, including Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir. Odinga also met with Azimio principals, including Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jeremiah Kioni of Jubilee party, and KANU’s Gideon Moi.
