🚗 NTSA Rolls Out Digital Speed Cameras With Instant Fines

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has officially launched digital speed cameras across major Kenyan roads, targeting speeding motorists with instant SMS alerts and automatic mobile money fines. The move follows a successful pilot program started in November 2024.

This high-tech system aims to enforce speed limits and reduce accidents through automation, data, and real-time penalties.

🎯 Key Roads Under Surveillance

NTSA has installed the new digital speed cameras along high-traffic corridors, including:

  • Red Hill Link Road
  • Southern Bypass
  • Thika Road
  • Northern Bypass

Additional road networks will be added progressively as the nationwide rollout continues.

📩 How the System Works

Once a vehicle exceeds the legal speed limit, the system:

  1. Instantly detects and identifies the vehicle
  2. Sends an SMS to the registered owner with offense details
  3. Automatically logs the fine to the NTSA account
  4. Requires immediate payment via M-Pesa or mobile money

The SMS includes:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Time and location of the offense
  • Actual speed vs. speed limit
  • Fine amount due

✅ Example: Driving 6–10 km/h over the limit = KES 3,000 fine

⚖️ NTSA Speed Violation Penalties (Per Traffic Act)

Speed Over LimitPenalty TypeFine/Consequence
6–10 km/hInstant fineKES 3,000
11–20 km/hHigher fineUp to KES 5,000+
21+ km/hSevere penaltyFines, license points, or jail

⚠️ Unpaid fines may result in license suspension or denial of NTSA services.

🛡️ Why It Matters

According to NTSA and Transport CS Davis Chirchir, this system is part of a broader traffic offense management strategy designed to:

  • Reduce road accidents caused by overspeeding
  • Digitize enforcement for efficiency and transparency
  • Encourage real-time accountability among motorists

📈 Pilot data shows improved compliance in test areas like Thika Road.

🎯 Final Thoughts on NTSA’s Digital Speed Camera Initiative

With NTSA rolling out digital speed cameras, Kenya is embracing tech-driven traffic enforcement. By automating detection, notification, and penalties, this system delivers a faster, more transparent solution to curb road overspeeding and save lives.

If you drive, stay alert and watch your speed—the cameras are watching too.
