In Kenya, a political party is called the Muungano Party (MP). Since its founding in 2007, the Muungano Party has supported only one candidate for the National Assembly, Tito Mutunga Muunda of Makueni, in the national elections of 2007. Out of nineteen contenders, he came in twelfth place with 517 votes.
The party fielded 16 candidates for the National Assembly in the 2013 elections. With 0.9% of the vote, it was able to secure Francis Mwangangi Kilonzo’s seat in Yatta. Additionally, it prevailed in Makueni County’s gubernatorial election, electing former MP Kivutha Kibwana to lead the county as governor. Kibwana quit in February 2017 to work with Wiper.
For the 2017 general elections, the party nominated twelve candidates for the National Assembly, notwithstanding Kilonzo’s departure from the party to run as a Chama Cha Uzalendo candidate. The party’s position in parliament was maintained when Fabian Muli was elected in Kangundo despite losing the Yatta seat.
