A green party in Kenya is called the Mazingira Green Party of Kenya. Formerly, it was called the Liberal Party of Kenya (LPK). LPK fielded Wangari Maathai, a future Nobel Peace Prize recipient, as a presidential candidate in the 1997 Kenyan general elections. Maathai was merely a secondary contender. She was not elected to the legislature. The Maathai-led party participated in the winning NARC alliance in the 2002 general elections. The Tetu Constituency parliamentary seat was won by Maathai herself.
Mazingira participated in the 2007 Kenyan general election as a member of President Mwai Kibaki’s newly established Party of National Unity. But Mazingira also put forward its own candidates . After Silas Muriuki defeated PNU candidate David Mwiraria to win the North Imenti Constituency parliamentary seat, Mazingira was awarded one parliamentary seat in the elections. After being defeated by the PNU candidate in the primary elections, Maathai ran on the Mazingira ticket, but she was defeated by him again in the parliamentary elections.
