A mobile network operator can also be known as a cellular company, wireless service provider, mobile network carrier, wireless carrier or simply MNO is a wireless communications service provider that either controls or owns the necessary infrastructure required to sell and deliver services to its users. The services include billing, back haul infrastructure, provision of computer systems and marketing, wireless network infrastructure, repair organizations, radio spectrum allocation, and customer care. The telecommunications industry has evidently developed over recent years to become a significant part of business and day to day life for all people from all walks of life.

China Mobile Limited provides mobile voice and multimedia services through its nationwide mobile telecommunications network across mainland China and Hong Kong. China Mobile is the largest wireless carrier in China, with 945.50 million subscribers as of June 2021. China Mobile Limited is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. It is the world’s largest mobile network operator by total number of subscribers. As of 31 October 2020, China Mobile Limited’s total market value stood at HK$965 billion, which is the largest red chip company.

Bharti Airtel Limited

Bharti Airtel Limited, also known as Airtel, is an Indian multinational telecommunications services company based in New Delhi. It operates in 18 countries across South Asia and Africa, as well as the Channel Islands. Airtel provides 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G+, 5G mobile services, fixed-line broadband, and voice services depending upon the country of operation. Airtel had also rolled out its VoLTE technology across all Indian telecom circles. It is the second largest mobile network operator in India and the second largest mobile network operator in the world. Airtel was named India’s 2nd most valuable brand in the first ever Brandz ranking by Millward Brown and WPP plc.

Airtel is credited with pioneering the business strategy of outsourcing all of its business operations except marketing, sales and finance and building the ‘minutes factory’ model of low cost and high volumes. The strategy has since been adopted by several operators. Airtel’s equipment is provided and maintained by Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia Networks whereas IT support is provided by Amdocs. The transmission towers are maintained by subsidiaries and joint venture companies of Bharti including Bharti Infratel and Indus Towers in India. Ericsson agreed for the first time to be paid by the minute for installation and maintenance of their equipment rather than being paid upfront, which allowed Airtel to provide low call rates of ₹1 (1.3¢ US)/minute

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, doing business as Jio, is an Indian telecommunications company and a subsidiary of Jio Platforms, headquartered in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It operates a national LTE network with coverage across all 22 telecom circles. Currently, Jio currently offers 4G and 4G+ service, however it is working to offer 5G and 6G as well.

Jio soft launched on 27 December 2015 with a beta for partners and employees, and became publicly available on 5 September 2016. It is the largest mobile network operator in India and the third largest mobile network operator in the world with over 42.62 crore (426.2 million) subscribers.

In September 2019, Jio launched a fiber to the home service, offering home broadband, television, and telephone services. As of September 2020, Reliance Industries has raised ₹1.65 lakh crore (US$22 billion) by selling nearly 33% equity stake in Jio Platforms

China Telecom Corp., Ltd

China Telecom Corp., Ltd. is a Chinese telecommunications company. It is one of the red chip listed companies of state-owned China Telecommunications Corporation. Its H shares have been traded on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong since 15 November 2002. It is a constituent of the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, the index for the H shares of state-controlled listed companies. The company was also listed on the New York Stock Exchange until January 2021. China Telecom is the second-largest wireless carrier in China, with 362.49 million subscribers as of June 2021.

América Móvil is a Mexican telecommunications corporation headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico. It is the 7th largest mobile network operator in terms of equity subscribers and one of the largest corporations in the world. América Móvil is a Forbes Global 2000 company. As of Q1, 2019, América Móvil had 277.4 million wireless subscribers, and 84.3 million fixed revenue generating units (“RGUs”, consisting of fixed voice, fixed data and Pay TV units).

The company’s world headquarters are located in Mexico City, Mexico. Its Mexican subsidiary Telcel is the largest mobile operator in that country, commanding a market share in excess of 70%. The company operates under its Claro subsidiaries in many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, these include the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Ecuador. MTN Group Limited, formerly M-Cell, is a South African multinational mobile telecommunications company, operating in many African and Asian countries. Its head office is in Johannesburg. As of December 2020, MTN recorded 280 million subscribers, making it the 8th largest mobile network operator in the world, and the largest in Africa. Active in over 20 countries, one-third of the company’s revenue comes from Nigeria, where it holds about 35% market share.

Orange S.A., formerly France Télécom S.A. (stylized as france telecom) is a French multinational telecommunications corporation. It has 266 million customers worldwide and employs 89,000 people in France, and 59,000 elsewhere. It is the 11th largest mobile network operator in the world and the 4th largest in Europe after Vodafone, Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom. In 2015, the group had revenue of €40 billion. The company’s head office is located in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.

Orange has been the company’s main brand for mobile, landline, internet and Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services since 2006. The Orange brand originated in the United Kingdom in 1994 after Hutchison Whampoa acquired a controlling stake in Microtel Communications: that company became a subsidiary of Mannesmann in 1999 and then was acquired by France Télécom in 2000. Vodafone Idea

Vi or Vodafone Idea Limited is an Indian telecom operator with its headquarters based in Mumbai and Gandhinagar.[9][10] It is a pan-India integrated GSM operator offering 2G, 3G, 4G, 4G+, VoLTE, and VoWiFi service. As of 31 October 2021, Vi has a subscriber base of 269.03 million, making it third largest mobile telecommunications network in India and 10th largest mobile telecommunications network in the world.

On 31 August 2018, Vodafone India merged with Idea Cellular, to form a new entity named Vodafone Idea Limited. Vodafone currently holds a 28.5% stake in the combined entity and Aditya Birla Group holds a 17.80% stake. Ravinder Takkar, Ex-CEO of Vodafone Romania is the current CEO of the company.

On 7 September 2020, Vodafone Idea unveiled its new brand identity, ‘Vi’ which involves the integration of the company’s erstwhile separate brands ‘Vodafone’ and ‘Idea’ into one unified brand. Deutsche Telekom was formed in 1995 when Deutsche Bundespost (at that time a monopoly under state ownership) was privatized. PT Telekomunikasi Selular (trading as Telkomsel) is an Indonesian wireless network provider founded in 1995 and is owned by Telkom Indonesia (65%) and Singtel (35%). It is headquartered in South Jakarta.

Telkomsel is the largest cellular telecommunication carrier in the country with 169.5 million customer base as of 2020. The company operates their GSM network on the 900–1800 MHz frequency range, as well as 3G, 4G, and 5G services on other frequencies. Telkomsel operates a variety of mobile services, chief among them are Telkomsel PraBayar (a consolidation of simPATI, kartuAs, and LOOP, all of them Telkomsel’s prepaid services) and Telkomsel Halo (formerly kartuHalo). Telenor ASA   is a Norwegian majority state-owned multinational telecommunications company headquartered at Fornebu in Bærum, close to Oslo. It is one of the world’s largest mobile telecommunications companies with operations worldwide, but focused in Scandinavia and Asia. It has extensive broadband and TV distribution operations in four Nordic countries, and a 10-year-old research and business line for machine-to-machine technology. Telenor owns networks in 8 countries.

Telenor is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange and had a market capitalization in November 2015 of kr 225 billion, making it the third largest company listed on the OSE after DNB and Equinor (previously known as Statoil).

Emirates Telecommunication Group Company PJSC (Etisalat)

Emirates Telecommunication Group Company PJSC (Arabic: مؤسسة الإمارات للاتصالات, Mu’asissat al-‘Imārāt lil-‘Ittiṣālāt, literally, “Emirates Corporation for Communications”), doing business as Etisalat (Arabic: اتصالات ittiṣālāt, literally “communications”), is a Emirati-based multinational telecommunications services provider, currently operating in 16 countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. It is the 18th largest mobile network operator in the world by number of subscribers. In December 2020, Etisalat claimed the world’s fastest 5G download speed at 9.1 Gigabits per second, a network which it has started rolling out in Dubai since 2017. Etisalat is the strongest brand in the Middle East and Africa, and the 4th strongest telecoms brand in the world.

On 31 December 2021, Etisalat reported consolidated revenue of AED53.3 billion and net profits of AED11.1 billion. The total market capitalization of the company currently is AED329 billion.

Etisalat is one of the Internet hubs in the Middle East (AS8966), providing connectivity to other telecommunications operators in the region. It is also the largest carrier of international voice traffic in the Middle East and Africa and the 12th largest voice carrier in the world. As of October 2008, Etisalat has 510 roaming agreements covering 186 countries and enabling BlackBerry, 3G, GPRS and voice roaming. Etisalat operates Points of Presence (PoP) in New York, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Singapore. Ooredoo QSC (Arabic: أريد; formerly Qtel) is a Qatari multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Ooredoo provides mobile, wireless, wire line, and content services with market share in domestic and international telecommunication markets, and in business (corporations and individuals) and residential markets.

It was the first operator globally to launch commercial 5G services in Qatar and is one of the world’s largest mobile telecommunications companies, with over 115 million customers worldwide as of 2018.

Verizon is an American wireless network operator that previously operated as a separate division of Verizon Communications under the name of Verizon Wireless. In a 2019 reorganization, Verizon moved the wireless products and services into the divisions Verizon Consumer and Verizon Business, and stopped using the Verizon Wireless name. Verizon is the largest wireless carrier in the United States, with 142.8 million subscribers at the end of Q4 2021.

The company is headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. It was founded in 2000 as a joint venture of American telecommunications firm Bell Atlantic, which would soon become Verizon Communications, and British multinational telecommunications company Vodafone. Verizon Communications became the sole owner in 2014 after buying Vodafone’s 45-percent stake in the company.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (d/b/a BSNL) is a government owned telecommunications service provider headquartered in New Delhi, India. It is under the ownership of Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India.

It was incorporated on 1 October 2000 by the Government of India. Its top official is designated as Chairman and Managing Director who is a central government civil servant of the Indian Communication Finance Service cadre or a central government engineer of the Indian Telecommunications Service cadre. Viettel Group (Vietnamese: Tập đoàn Công nghiệp – Viễn thông Quân đội, lit. ‘Military Telecommunications & Industry Corporation’) is a Vietnamese multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Hanoi, Vietnam. Viettel is the largest telecommunications service provider in Vietnam. It is a state-owned enterprise and operated by the Ministry of Defence.

Viettel Telecom is currently the dominant network operator with the largest market share in Vietnamese telecommunications services market.[2] For 30 years, Viettel has grown from a construction company to a complex of five business lines including telecommunications and information technology (IT); research and manufacture of electronic and telecommunications equipment; defense industry; cyber security and digital services. CK Hutchison Holdings Limited is a Hong Kong-based and Cayman Islands-registered multinational conglomerate corporation. The company was formed in March 2015 through the merger of Cheung Kong Holdings and its main associate company Hutchison Whampoa. It has four core businesses ‐ ports and related services, retail, infrastructure and telecommunications – which operate in over 50 countries, as well as several other investments around the world.

MCI is a subsidiary of the Telecommunication Company of Iran and has approximately 17 million postpaid and 49 million prepaid subscribers. Hamrahe Aval’s service is available in 1,239 cities and over 70,000 kilometers of highway in Iran is sheet. It provides roaming services via 271 partner operators in more than 112 countries.

In December 2010, 5.5% of the MCI shares were offered on the Iranian over-the-counter market (Farabourse), at a value of $396 million, which was the largest IPO-to-date in the Iranian OTC equity market.

In August 2013, the company moved from the OTC to the Tehran Stock Exchange

Currently, 90% of MCI’s shares are owned by the Telecommunication Company of Iran, and the remaining 10% of shares are public at the Tehran Stock Exchange. In 2015, MCI launched 3G, and 4G technologies by a new brand name as Notrino.

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS)

MTS (Russian: Мобильные ТелеСистемы, МТС, “Mobile TeleSystems”), headquartered in Moscow, is the largest mobile network operator in Russia, operating on GSM, UMTS and LTE standards. Apart from cellular network, the company also offers local telephone service, broadband, mobile television, cable television, satellite television and digital television.

NTT Docomo Inc.

NTT Docomo, Inc. (株式会社NTTドコモ, Kabushiki gaisha Entītī Dokomo, formerly and still colloquially stylized as NTT DoCoMo until 2008) is a Japanese mobile phone operator. The name is officially an abbreviation of the phrase, “do communications over the mobile network“, and is also from a compound word dokomo, meaning “everywhere” in Japanese. Docomo provides phone, video phone (FOMA and Some PHS), i-mode (internet), and mail (i-mode mail, Short Mail, and SMS) services. The company’s headquarters are in the Sanno Park Tower, Nagatachō, Chiyoda, Tokyo.[7] NTT Docomo is the largest wireless carrier in Japan, with 82.632 million subscribers as of March 2021.

Docomo had been spun off from Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) in August 1991 to take over the mobile cellular operations, although the parent company had the majority stake until the re-privatization in 2020. It provides 2G (mova) PDC cellular services, 3G (FOMA) W-CDMA, 4G LTE and 5G NR services. Its businesses also included PHS (Paldio), paging, and satellite. Docomo ceased offering a PHS service on January 7, 2008. In late 2020, Docomo was bought back by NTT for about $40 billion

Globe Telecom Inc.

Globe Telecom, Inc., commonly shortened as Globe, is a major provider of telecommunications services in the Philippines. The company operates the largest mobile network in the Philippines and one of the largest fixed-line and broadband networks. As of March 2022, Globe’s total mobile subscriber base reached 87.4 million. It is also the country’s largest telecommunications company in terms of market capitalization.

The company’s principal shareholders are Ayala Corporation and Singtel. It is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol GLO and had a market capitalization of ₱363 billion as of the end of August 2021.

Globe offers commercial wireless services through its 2G, 3G, 3.5G HSPA+, 4G LTE, and LTE-A networks, with 5G currently being deployed in key areas in the Philippines. Its 5G coverage is available in over 2,000 locations all over the country and about 96% of the National Capital Region.

In 2016, Globe introduced its Globe Lifestyle brand as a way to connect to its customers through fashion. It also launched two entertainment divisions: Anima (formerly Globe Studios), which focuses on film and television production, and Globe Live, which focuses on live concerts and musical events.

PLDT Inc.

PLDT, Inc., formerly known as the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (Filipino: Kompanya ng Teleponong Pangmalayuan ng Pilipinas),[3] is a Philippine telecommunications, internet and digital service holdings company. It is one of the country’s major telecommunications providers, along with Globe Telecom and startup Dito Telecommunity. Founded in 1928, it is the oldest and largest telecommunications company in the Philippines, in terms of assets and revenues.

The company’s core businesses are fixed-line telecommunications, mobile telephony services, broadband, and internet of things services under various brands. It also has investments in broadcasting, print media, utilities, and direct-to-home satellite services, among others. As of 2019, PLDT is listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange (the only Philippine company to be listed in NYSE) and is being controlled by First Pacific, a Hong Kong-based investment management company; Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, through its subsidiaries; and JG Summit, a major conglomerate that operates the airline Cebu Pacific, food manufacturer Universal Robina, and real estate firm Robinsons Land.

Throughout the past decades, PLDT has received numerous complaints from the Philippine House of Representatives and Senate regarding slow internet connection.

MegaFon

MegaFon (Russian: МегаФон), previously known as North-West GSM, is the second largest mobile phone operator and the third largest telecom operator in Russia. It works in the GSM, UMTS and LTE standard. As of June 2012, the company serves 62.1 million subscribers in Russia and 1.6 million in Tajikistan. It is headquartered in Moscow.

In 2002 the company changed its name from North-West GSM to MegaFon when it acquired several regional companies, becoming the first GSM company in Russia to cover all its territory. The name “MegaFon” in Russian is spelled and pronounced exactly like the Russian word for megaphone; other connotations are mega- as “big” and fon as “telephone”.

KDDI

KDDI Corporation (KDDI株式会社, KDDI Kabushiki Gaisha) (TYO: 9433) is a Japanese telecommunications operator formed on October 1, 2000 through the merger of DDI Corp. (Daini-Denden Inc.), KDD (Kokusai Denshin Denwa) Corp. (itself a former listed state-owned enterprise privatized in 1998), and IDO Corp. It has its headquarters in the Garden Air Tower in Iidabashi, Chiyoda, Tokyo.

KDDI provides mobile cellular services using the “au by KDDI” brand. ISP network services are provided under the au one net brand, while “au Hikari” is the name under which long-distance and international voice and data communications services and Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services are marketed. ADSL broadband services carry the brand name “ADSL One”, and IP telephony over copper is branded as “Metal Plus”.
