Kenya Power has initiated a crucial prepaid meter update exercise, urging all customers using prepaid meters (tokens) to update their meters to ensure uninterrupted power access. This initiative aims to transition all prepaid meters smoothly and address existing challenges.

Key Details of the Update Exercise

Deadline: Customers must update their meters by 31st August 2024.

Targeted Meters: The update targets all prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal method ensuring security in token generation.

Scope: A total of 7.4 million prepaid meters are targeted for this exercise. Any meters not updated by the deadline will stop accepting tokens.

Campaign: The initiative is branded as the “Update Token Meter Yako Campaign.”

Free Service: Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Joseph Siror, emphasized that this update exercise is free of charge. No customer will be required to pay for the meter update.

Customer Support: The power authority has committed to providing all necessary information and support to help customers complete the update process smoothly. Special attention will be given to customers facing challenges during the update.

How to Update Your Prepaid Meter

  1. Token Purchase Notification: Upon purchasing tokens, customers will receive a message prompting them to update their meters.
  2. Two Codes: Consumers will receive a reset code and an update code. These codes must be entered into the meter following the instructions provided in the SMS before loading the new token.

Steps to Update:

  • Enter the reset code into your meter.
  • Follow by entering the update code.
  • Load the new token.

Unused Tokens: Customers are advised to load any underutilized tokens before updating their meters. Failure to do so will render these tokens invalid.

Customer Assistance

Kenya Power has set up dedicated support teams to assist with any issues that may arise during the update process. Customers can reach out to Kenya Power’s customer service for any queries or assistance required.
