Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology History

The university was started in 1981 as Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT), a middle-level college by the government of Kenya with assistance from the Japanese government. Plans for the establishment of JKCAT started in 1977 In early 1978, the Kenyan president, Jomo Kenyatta, donated 200 hectares of farmland for the establishment of the college. The first group of students were admitted on 4 May 1981. The new president Daniel Arap Moi formally opened JKUAT on 17 March 1982. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

The first graduation ceremony was held in April 1984 with diploma certificates presented to graduates in agricultural engineering, food technology and horticulture. On 1 September 1988, Moi declared JKUAT a constituent College of Kenyatta University through a legal notice, under the Kenyatta University Act (CAP 210C). The name of JKUAT officially changed to Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). It was finally established as a university through the JKUAT Act, 1994 and inaugurated on 7 December 1994.

In June 2019, the university graduated 118 PhDs, of whom 89 were from the College of Human Resource Development. The Commission for University Education said it would investigate allegations that rules on supervisor–student ratios and peer review had been breached

Online courses in Kenyatta University – what else to know

Orientation

Upon registering, you’ll be taken through an orientation exercise to help you understand how to navigate KU’s kusoma e-learning system (DSVOL).

This may be held at the respective regional campuses or the main campus along Thika superhighway.

E-learning gadgets

To facilitate easy learning, KU online learning center issues tablets for free to new students.

You are notified through their Facebook page and other communication channels about the dates of collection from the satellite offices or respective Directors/coordinators.

Usually, you should have the gadget by the time you attend the orientation session.

E-learning exams

You are expected to write your trimester exams physically at the campus closest to you or the main campus.

As such, it’s important to make travel and accommodation arrangements in advance if you’re coming from far.

The exact dates are typically published on the main website.

However, you don’t need to physically visit KU for the CATs and course assignments (unless when writing your final year project)- these are sent online.

Credit waivers

Diploma holders joining a degree program  may be awarded a credit waiver, upon application, by their respective Schools.

You should apply for the applicable credit waiver using the prescribed form (request it from your school or download from Kenyatta University’s website at www.ku.ac.ke)
