What id Dolby Atmos?
Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology created by Dolby Laboratories. This technology enhances traditional surround sound by incorporating height channels, enabling sound to be perceived as three-dimensional objects without horizontal or vertical boundaries. Following its introduction for cinema use, several consumer products branded under Atmos, such as in-ceiling and up-firing speakers, have been launched.
History
The debut installation of Dolby Atmos took place at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles during the premiere of “Brave” in June 2012. Initially, the technology was installed in approximately 25 locations worldwide in 2012, but this number expanded to over 300 by 2013. As of October 2022, more than 10,000 cinema screens worldwide were equipped with or committed to installing Dolby Atmos technology. Dolby Atmos has been adapted for home theater systems and is a key audio component in Dolby Cinema. Starting in 2016, various electronic devices and, from 2017, smartphones began supporting Dolby Atmos recording and mixing capabilities. The technical details for Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos are fully standardized and can be found in ETSI TS 103 420.
In 2016, the television show “Power” became the first to be natively mixed and broadcast in Atmos for its third season. In the same year, “Game of Thrones” adapted its previous 5.1 sound mixes for a Blu-ray reissue. The 25th anniversary reissue of R.E.M.’s 1992 album “Automatic for the People” in 2017 marked the first major music release in Atmos.
In 2022, Dolby Atmos entered a partnership with NetEase to bring spatial audio to the Chinese music streaming market. This collaboration involves integrating Atmos support in compatible smartphones and vehicles.
