How to back up WhatsApp to Google Drive. WhatsApp allows you to easily back up all your chats to Google Drive. In order to use Google Drive backup, you will need a Google account activated on your phone as well as Google Play services installed on your phone.
You also get the option to change your Google account, but if you do that you will lose access to any backups that you saved in the previous account. Here’s a quick guide on how you can back up your WhatsApp chats to Google Drive and restore them.
In order to use Google Drive backup, you’ll need:
- A Google account activated on your device.
- Google Play services installed on your device. This is an app that’s used to update Google apps and apps from the Google Play Store.
- Enough free space on your device to create the backup.
- A strong and stable internet connection.
How to Set up Google Drive backups
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up to Google Drive.
- Select a backup frequency other than Never.
- Select the Google account you’d like to back up your chat history to.
- If you don’t have a Google account connected, tap Add account when prompted and enter your login credentials.
- Tap Back up over to choose the network you want to use for backups.
Note: Backing up over a cellular data network might result in additional data charges.
Turn on end-to-end encrypted backup
For an additional layer of security, you can turn on end-to-end encryption for your Google Drive backup.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
- Tap TURN ON.
- Create a password or use a 64-digit encryption key instead.
- Tap Create to create your end-to-end encrypted backup.
Manually back up to Google Drive
You can also choose to manually back up your chats to Google Drive at any time.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > BACK UP.

Change the frequency of your Google Drive backup
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up to Google Drive.
- Select a backup frequency.
How to Change the account you want to use for backups
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options > Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Google Account.
- Select the Google account you’d like to back up your chat history to.
Note: If you change your Google account, you’ll lose access to any backups saved in that account.
