The DualSense controller’s built-in microphone turns on whenever you boot your PlayStation 5. But you can set it to mute and turn on the microphone only when required. The PS5 Controller’s Microphone
The DualSense controller works alongside your PS5 to make things like getting immersed in a game or creating and sharing game captures easier with features like the capture button and adaptive triggers.
Plus, with the built-in microphone, you no longer need to pause your game to connect an input device to speak with other players. While the feature does have some notable downsides, it’s handy when you need to give brief instructions or answer questions here and there.
One of the major downsides is the fact that the microphone is on by default. Each time you power your console on and load into a multiplayer game, others can hear you unless you remember to turn it off.
How to Mute Your PS5 Controller’s Microphone
It’s very quick and easy to mute your DualSense mic. Of course, you could just tap the microphone button on your DualSense controller to mute it each time—it’s located just at the bottom-center of your controller.
However, if you want to avoid the need to remember this, you can change your settings to keep your microphone off by default.
To do this, go to your PS5’s settings menu, down to the Sound menu, and into the Microphone settings. There, you can toggle Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute.
Set a DualSense Controller Mic to Mute by Default
On your PlayStation 5’s homescreen, go to the gear-shaped “Settings” icon in the top-right corner.
From the Settings menu, scroll down and select “Sound.”
Select “Microphone” from the left column.
Select the “Microphone Status When Logged In” option, which shows “On” by default.
When the toggle option opens, select “Mute.” After that, the “Microphone Status When Logged In” will show as “Mute.”
Now, your DualSense controller will have a solid orange light on the Mute button when you start the PlayStation 5. To unmute the mic on the DualSense controller, tap the Mute button, and the orange light will switch off.
That’s it! You’ll never have to worry about accidentally letting the DualSense controller transmitting your voice or the surrounding noises.
If you want to turn on your microphone mid-game, you can still do so by clicking the microphone button. You’ll know it’s muted when the button is glowing orange.
