Al-Adaam – Qatar National flag

The essentials of handling and displaying the Qatar national flag [For the general populace]: The flag holds significant value in the national consciousness, serving as an emblem of identity and origin, embodying allegiance to the nation. It is integral to Qatar’s history and heritage, evoking pride among its people. There are specific legal guidelines and protocols for managing the flag, emphasizing the collective duty of both individuals and organizations to adhere to these established standards, ensuring the flag’s continuous respect and preservation.

The meaning behind the Qatar flag’s colors:
The national flag of Qatar features maroon and white colors. Contrary to common belief, the maroon does not represent bloodshed, nor does the white symbolize peace in times of war. Historically, the flag was dyed red, which faded to maroon or purplish-red due to sun exposure, especially noticeable on Purple Island. In 1932, despite the British Navy’s suggestion to adopt red, Qatar chose maroon to maintain a historical and cultural connection. The flag’s current design, established in 1960 by H.H. Sheikh Ali bin Abdulla Al-Thani, includes nine serrated edges, symbolizing Qatar’s position as the 9th member of the Trucial Coast Convention of 1916. Since Qatar’s entry into the United Nations in 1971, the flag has flown in its current maroon and white form.

The name ‘Al Adaam’ for the Qatari flag denotes the maroon shade prevalent on the flag, a term deeply rooted in Arabic linguistics related to support and stability.

Dimensions and materials of the Qatari flag:
The flag is a horizontal rectangle with an 11:28 width-to-length ratio. For official state purposes, it is made from Triknit Lux Polyester or Polyester Satin, while the public may use any material, provided the color scheme remains unchanged.

Public usage guidelines for the Qatar national flag:
On occasions like Qatar National Day, the flag is prominently displayed on various items, including vehicles, buildings, and apparel, symbolizing unity and respect for the nation. Adherence to specific legal and protocol guidelines ensures these practices remain respectful and lawful.

Handling the Qatari flag with respect:
The flag should always be displayed with dignity, avoiding any form of disrespect. It must be produced to exact specifications, remain undamaged and clean, and not be altered or used for unauthorized purposes. When transporting, the flag should be properly folded to avoid contact with the ground.

Displaying the flag on a pole:
The flag should occupy the highest position on the pole and be properly secured. It must hang vertically, with the maroon side downward, ensuring it is visible and unobstructed.

Flag protocols in various settings:
In official ceremonies, the flag must be prominently and respectfully displayed, with protocols for its raising, lowering, and saluting, ensuring due respect is shown during national anthems and processions.

Care and retirement of the flag:
