Garrett Augustus Morgan (1877–1963) was a trailblazing African-American inventor, entrepreneur, and community leader whose groundbreaking inventions saved countless lives.   1. The Gas Mask (1914)
    • Morgan patented his “Safety Hood and Smoke Protector” in 1914, a device designed to protect users from harmful gases and smoke.
    • The gas mask featured:
      • A hood to cover the head and face.
      • A filtration system that provided breathable air in toxic environments.
    • Rise to Fame:
      • In 1916, Morgan’s gas mask gained national attention when he used it to rescue workers trapped in a tunnel explosion under Lake Erie. Morgan personally led the rescue effort, saving lives and demonstrating the effectiveness of his invention.
      • Following the rescue, demand for his gas masks surged, and they were adopted by fire departments and later modified for use in World War I.
  2. The Traffic Signal (1923)
    • Morgan invented and patented a three-position traffic signal to improve roadway safety after witnessing a serious accident between a car and a horse-drawn buggy.
    • His design introduced an intermediate warning position between “Stop” and “Go,” reducing accidents by giving drivers time to slow down.
    • Morgan sold the patent rights to General Electric, and the device became the precursor to modern traffic lights, revolutionizing road safety worldwide.
  3. Chemical Hair Straightener
    • In addition to his life-saving inventions, Morgan also developed the first chemical hair straightener, launching a successful product line for African-American hair care.
