The Water Sector Trust Fund (Water Fund) is a state corporation under Kenya’s Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation. It was established under the Water Act of 2016 as a successor to the Water Services Trust Fund and focuses on financing water, sanitation, and water resources management projects in underserved and marginalized areas.
Functions of the Water Sector Trust Fund
- Grant Provision: Provides conditional and unconditional grants to counties to support the financing, development, and management of water services in marginalized areas.
- Community-Level Initiatives: Funds community-based projects for sustainable water resource management.
- Development in Rural Areas: Finances the development of water services in rural regions that are not commercially viable for licensed providers.
- Support for Underserved Urban Areas: Assists in the development of water services in underserved and low-income urban areas.
- Research Funding: Supports research in water resource management, water services, sewerage, and sanitation.
