Francys Arsentiev and her husband, Sergei Arsentiev, achieved their goal of reaching the summit of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in May 1998. However, their triumph was short-lived. During their descent, Francys became exhausted, succumbed to the extreme cold, and suffered from altitude sickness. She became separated from her husband in the chaos.
A team of mountaineers encountered Francys on their way down and attempted to assist her. They managed to move her approximately 800 feet below the summit but were forced to abandon their efforts due to their own exhaustion and the perilous conditions. Tragically, they left her behind, believing she would not survive the night.
The following day, two mountaineers returning from the summit found Francys still alive but in a critical state. In 2007, her body was moved away from the main climbing route to a hidden location on the mountain. This act of respect was meant to preserve her dignity and remove the haunting sight from the path of future climbers.
