Elijah Kanyi is a journalist and camera operator for Africa Uncensored. The seasoned journalist was recognized for his outstanding work this year and was given the 2023 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards’ (AJEA) Camera Person and Journalist of the Year titles.
Alongside John Allan Namu and Clint Obere, he received recognition for the investigative piece Justice be Our Shield, which won best investigative report in the internet category.
The 2022 investigative narrative aimed to unravel the mystery surrounding the assassination of Willie Kimani, an attorney with International Justice Mission (IJM), and his client Josephat Mwendwa, as well as their dependable cab driver Joseph Muiruri, by law enforcement.
In their investigative report, Africa Uncensored journalists obtained an exclusive confession audio from a police officer detailing the murder’s method of execution.
Kanyi also created The Bullet and the Virus, a BBC documentary that aired in 2020.
The documentary looked at the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on the nation and the ensuing use of force by law enforcement to enforce curfews imposed by the government.
Kanyi was named a nominee for the 2020 Rory Peck Trust News Features Award in recognition of the documentary.
When he was just starting out, Kanyi, who has worked in the media for 13 years, also wanted to play football.
