What is Eddie DeBartolo’s Net Worth?

Eddie DeBartolo is an American businessman with a net worth of $3 billion. He is best known as the former owner of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, a team he purchased in 1977. During his 23-year tenure, the 49ers won five Super Bowl titles, setting a record for a single owner. In 2000, he transferred ownership of the team to his sister Denise York in exchange for more shares of the Simon Property Group. DeBartolo also owns a portion of Famous Famiglia, a popular pizza restaurant chain, and runs DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment. The 49ers are currently run by his nephew, Jed York.

DeBartolo inherited DeBartolo Realty Corporation from his father and later merged it with Simon Property Group, creating one of the largest real estate conglomerates in US history. The publicly-traded Simon Property Group controls more than $30 billion worth of assets and has a market cap approaching $50 billion.

Early Life and Education

Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. was born on November 6, 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Marie Montani and Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., a renowned real estate developer. He has a younger sister named Denise, who also became a billionaire businesswoman. DeBartolo attended Cardinal Mooney High School and later the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Career Beginnings

Eddie DeBartolo began his career by working in his father’s company, the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, focusing on developing shopping malls. The company eventually became one of the largest public real estate businesses in the country, controlling more than two billion square feet of retail space at its peak.

San Francisco 49ers

In 1977, DeBartolo Sr. purchased the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and handed ownership to Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who invested substantial resources into the team. Under his leadership, the 49ers became the most successful NFL franchise of the 1980s, winning Super Bowls in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, and 1995. DeBartolo Jr. was the NFL owner with the most Super Bowl victories in history and led the team to the most wins in a decade. He was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2009.

Legal Troubles

Eddie DeBartolo has faced various legal issues. In 1992, he was accused of sexual assault by a cocktail waitress, which he denied but settled out of court for $200,000.

In 1998, DeBartolo was implicated in a corruption case involving former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards, who demanded $400,000 from DeBartolo in exchange for a riverboat casino license. DeBartolo pleaded guilty to failing to report a felony, receiving a $1 million fine and two years of probation. He was also fined by the NFL and barred from active control of the 49ers for a year. In 2000, he handed control of the team to his sister, Denise York.

Personal Life

Eddie DeBartolo married his wife, Candy, in 1968. They have three daughters: Lisa, Nicole, and Tiffanie. Tiffanie is a novelist and filmmaker, known for directing the 1996 romantic comedy “Dream for an Insomniac” and co-founding the independent record label Bright Antenna and the ShineMaker Foundation.
